A 57-year-old doctor from Varanasi was allegedly blackmailed for Rs 8 lakh after meeting a man named Vikas through a gay dating application on July 20, 2025. The incident occurred at the Silverstone Parade hotel in the Maldahiya area where Vikas secretly took nude photographs of the doctor and threatened to circulate them unless paid.
The doctor transferred the money over two days under duress before filing a complaint at Sigra Police Station. Police have registered a case and are investigating using CCTV footage and digital transaction records while searching for the accused.
Blackmail and Threats in “Shiv Nagri”
According to the doctor’s statement, he met Vikas after connecting on a dating app and invited him to his hotel room, asking him to bring beer. Vikas arrived around 10 PM with beer and snacks. After some time, as the doctor relaxed and disrobed, Vikas secretly took explicit photographs and physically assaulted him — slapping and admonishing the doctor that such behaviour “does not suit you at this age” and warning him about the cultural sensibilities in Varanasi, often called “Shiv Nagri.”
Vikas tore the doctor’s clothes, shattered a glass threateningly, and warned that he would send the photos to the doctor’s family and acquaintances. Claiming strong political and criminal connections, Vikas coerced the doctor into paying Rs 8 lakh over two days through multiple digital transactions before fleeing.
Police Action and Investigation Underway
The doctor filed a complaint at Sigra Police Station immediately following the incident. Varanasi police, under the guidance of Assistant Commissioner Ishant Soni and Inspector Sanjay Kumar Mishra, registered an FIR under sections 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide), 115 (voluntarily causing hurt), 324 (mischief), along with provisions related to extortion, cheating, criminal intimidation, and fraud under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The police are meticulously examining CCTV footage from the hotel and tracing the financial transactions to apprehend Vikas. Authorities have affirmed their commitment to delivering swift justice and highlighted the seriousness of protecting victims of such crimes, particularly sensitive cases arising from digital platforms.
Context: Online Dating Risks and Social Implications
This disturbing case sheds light on the vulnerabilities individuals face when engaging on dating platforms, especially queer communities who often face marginalisation and privacy risks. While dating apps foster connectivity and social engagement, they can also expose users to exploitation, blackmail, and violence. This incident underscores the pressing need for robust digital safety measures and greater societal empathy for sexual minorities.
Police responsiveness and legal safeguards are critical to deter predators and provide timely support to victims. Moreover, there is a larger conversation around dismantling stigma and fostering inclusive attitudes that protect dignity and rights irrespective of sexual orientation.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
The Logical Indian views this case as a stark reminder of the dual-edged nature of technology and society’s responsibility to respond compassionately to such incidents. Creating safe environments — both online and offline — is essential for vulnerable communities to live without fear of exploitation or discrimination.
We urge policymakers, law enforcement, and communities to prioritise dialogue, empathy, and protective frameworks. Integrating digital literacy with emotional support services can empower individuals to navigate relationships securely.
