Valentine’s Day Tragedy: Noida Couple Found Dead Inside Car; WhatsApp Note Disputed, Caste Murder Alleged

Police investigate a suspected murder-suicide involving a long-term couple in Noida, while families trade allegations of betrayal and caste-based violence.

In a chilling incident on Valentine’s Day, 32-year-old Sumit and 26-year-old Rekha were found dead with gunshot wounds inside a locked Tata Altroz in Noida’s Sector 107. The car was discovered near Pillar No. 84 on Dadri Road, within the jurisdiction of the Sector 39 police station, after residents reported hearing gunshots.

While a WhatsApp note allegedly sent by Sumit cites emotional distress over Rekha’s impending marriage to another man as the motive for a murder-suicide, Sumit’s family has countered these claims. They allege the couple was murdered due to caste-based hostility from the woman’s family. Police have seized an illegal pistol from the scene and are currently awaiting post-mortem results to confirm the sequence of events.

A Chilling Message and Conflicting Claims

The discovery has sent shockwaves through the NCR, specifically as details of the couple’s 15-year relationship emerge. According to Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Noida) Manisha Singh, “Prima facie, it appears that the man shot the woman and then died by suicide.” Officers had to break the car’s window to retrieve the bodies, finding a pistol in Sumit’s right hand and no signs of a struggle.

A purported WhatsApp message sent by Sumit at 3:39 PM on Friday stated, “I am going to end my life… she promised me marriage but now she is going to marry someone else.” However, Sumit’s brother, Sachin, questioned this narrative, noting that Sumit had recently bought a flat and the car for their future together. “We believe both were murdered and were victims of casteism,” he stated, pointing out that the car was found suspiciously close to Rekha’s village in Salarpur.

A Decade of Love Amidst Growing Tensions

Background details reveal a complex history; Sumit, who ran a water plant in Delhi’s Trilokpuri, and Rekha, a private firm employee, had been together since their teens. While Sumit’s family claimed Rekha was a regular at their family functions, Rekha’s father told investigators that they had rejected a marriage proposal from Sumit a year ago due to caste differences and believed the two had stopped communicating.

Both individuals had been reported missing on Friday—Rekha from Noida’s Sector 62 and Sumit from Trilokpuri. Police are now scanning footage from over 50 CCTV cameras to reconstruct their final hours, as Rekha’s phone was reportedly switched back on briefly on Saturday morning, suggesting the tragedy occurred hours after they initially met.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

This heartbreaking incident is a grim reminder of how deeply entrenched social prejudices and the lack of mental health support can devastate young lives. Whether this was a desperate act of murder-suicide or a violent crime fueled by caste-based hatred, it highlights a collective failure to protect individuals navigating inter-caste relationships.

We must move toward a society where dialogue replaces coercion and where the “honour” of a family is never weighed against the life of a human being. Love should not require a sacrifice, and grief should not be the only outcome of a decade-long commitment.

As a community, how can we better support young couples facing systemic discrimination to ensure they feel safe enough to seek help rather than reach a point of no return?
