In a landmark move to bolster bilateral relations and regional connectivity, Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev announced a 30-day visa-free entry policy for Indian citizens during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day state visit to Tashkent on 30 August 2026.
The initiative removes consular barriers for Indian holidaymakers, entrepreneurs, and students, granting them direct access to explore the Central Asian nation without an advance visa or e-visa fee. Welcomed enthusiastically by Indian travellers and trade delegations alike, the policy is designed to accelerate business partnerships, cultural collaboration, and people-to-people exchanges between the two historic Silk Road partners.
Deepening Economic Ties
Highlighting the deepening partnership between the two republics, President Mirziyoyev described India as a “reliable strategic partner” during the delegation-level summit. “Last year, our bilateral trade exceeded USD 1 billion for the first time.
In recent years, the number of joint ventures has increased sevenfold, supported by 14 direct flights operating between our countries every week,” Mirziyoyev stated, affirming that visa-free mobility will significantly boost commercial dynamism and tourism. Beyond commerce, the cultural resonance between the two nations continues to flourish; Indian centres commemorating Lal Bahadur Shastri and Mahatma Gandhi remain active in Tashkent, while the popularity of yoga across Uzbekistan has surged with regular national festivals since the establishment of its domestic Yoga Federation.
A Legacy Of Trust
Diplomatic engagement between New Delhi and Tashkent dates back to March 1992, when India became one of the first countries to recognise Uzbekistan’s sovereignty following the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
Upgraded to a Strategic Partnership in 2011, the relationship has grown through high-level dialogues and joint economic frameworks. Following his bilateral engagements in Tashkent, Prime Minister Modi travels to Bishkek for the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit. This visa exemption reflects a broader regional pivot towards dismantling bureaucratic friction, making destinations like Samarkand, Bukhara, and Tashkent seamlessly accessible to Indian explorers and young professionals.
