Eight people were killed and two others injured after a vehicle carrying around 10 passengers fell nearly 300 metres into a deep gorge near Nail village on the Chamba-Koti motor road in Uttarakhand’s Tehri Garhwal district on Thursday, officials said.

The victims, all residents of Ghansali, were reportedly returning home from Rishikesh after performing funeral rites when the driver lost control of the vehicle.

Rescue teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police, and health department rushed to the spot and carried out a challenging operation to recover bodies and evacuate the injured.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed grief over the tragedy and directed officials to ensure proper treatment for the injured and swift relief measures.

Vehicle Plunges Post-Funeral Journey

The fatal accident took place near Nail village in the Chamba development block of Tehri Garhwal district when a utility vehicle (Max/ Bolero Camper, as described by officials) lost control on a hilly stretch of road and plunged into a deep gorge, falling nearly 300 metres below the roadway. According to district officials, there were around 10 passengers on board at the time of the crash.

Eight passengers died on the spot due to the impact, while two survivors identified as Uttam (30), a resident of Lostu Badiyargarh village, and Ankit (22) from Nelchami village in Ghansali were rescued from the wreckage in a critical condition. They were immediately shifted to the District Hospital in Baurari, where doctors confirmed that both are stable and out of danger.

District Disaster Management Officer Brijesh Bhatt stated that the passengers were residents of Ghansali and were returning home together after attending funeral rites in Haridwar/Rishikesh region when the accident occurred. He added that the vehicle reportedly lost control on a sharp hilly stretch near Nail before plunging into the gorge.

SDRF Rescue, Official Response

Immediately after the accident was reported through emergency channels, teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local police, fire services, and health department were deployed to the spot. The steep and inaccessible terrain made rescue operations particularly challenging, requiring coordinated efforts to retrieve bodies and evacuate survivors from the deep gorge.

Senior officials, including the District Magistrate, Superintendent of Police, and local MLA Kishore Upadhyay, reached the site to supervise the ongoing rescue and relief work. Authorities confirmed that post-mortem examinations of the deceased were initiated after recovery, while ambulances were kept on standby to transport the injured.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed deep sorrow over the incident, calling it “extremely distressing,” and instructed the district administration to ensure immediate and adequate medical care for the injured. He also directed continuous monitoring of relief operations and extended condolences to the bereaved families, praying for the speedy recovery of the injured.

Hill Road Safety Concerns

This incident once again highlights the persistent dangers of road travel in Uttarakhand’s hilly districts, where narrow roads, sharp bends, and steep slopes significantly increase the risk of accidents. In many such cases, even minor loss of control can lead to vehicles plunging into deep gorges, often with fatal consequences.

Experts and officials have repeatedly flagged concerns over road safety, overloading, and the need for stricter enforcement of transport regulations in these regions.

According to recent patterns reported in similar accidents across Uttarakhand, many victims are often local residents travelling long distances on hilly roads for personal or family-related obligations, making such tragedies even more emotionally devastating for communities.

The state has witnessed multiple fatal gorge accidents in recent years, underscoring systemic challenges in infrastructure maintenance and emergency response accessibility in remote terrains.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

This tragic accident in Tehri Garhwal is yet another reminder of how urgently India needs to prioritise road safety in mountainous regions. While the swift response of SDRF and local authorities reflects commendable emergency coordination, prevention must remain the focus through stronger road engineering, better signage on dangerous stretches, stricter vehicle fitness enforcement, and limits on passenger overload in hill routes.

Equally important is investing in safer transport alternatives and improving surveillance on high-risk roads, especially those frequently used for inter-village and inter-district travel. Every such incident represents not just a statistical loss, but families shattered in moments, often during deeply emotional journeys like funerals.
