A postgraduate student of Government Doon Medical College was expelled from the hostel for organising a late-night party in violation of hostel rules. The incident, which occurred between 2:30 am and 3:00 am on October 11, came to light after a video circulated on social media, prompting an internal inquiry.
Police intervened following complaints about loud DJ music, and tensions escalated during their visit. The student who hosted the party was fined ₹10,000, expelled from the hostel, while others involved were fined ₹5,000 each. The college administration also issued warning letters and initiated strict disciplinary measures.
Party, Police Intervention, and Aftermath
The party took place in the postgraduate hostel at Government Doon Medical College, with students playing loud music late into the night. Police arrived following noise complaints and encountered resistance from the students. The situation escalated, requiring additional police force to manage the crowd.
During the commotion, an outsider reportedly misbehaved with a neurosurgeon present at the scene. The college promptly formed a five-member inquiry committee led by Dr NS Bisht. Based on the committee’s report, decisive action was taken against the host and participants, emphasizing the college’s zero-tolerance stance on hostel discipline violations.
Background: Lapses in Hostel Supervision
The inquiry revealed that the absence of hostel security personnel and wardens during the incident contributed to the situation spiralling out of control. The hostel warden was reportedly on leave, and security guards failed to enforce rules or prevent outsiders from entering.
Following the incident, the security head was removed from duty, and stricter surveillance measures were ordered to prevent recurrence. Principal Dr Geeta Jain highlighted plans for regular patrols and tighter supervision in student accommodations, underscoring a renewed commitment to campus discipline and student safety.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
While students must enjoy balanced social lives, respect for community rules and safety in shared spaces is paramount. The Logical Indian acknowledges the college’s prompt action in upholding discipline but encourages institutions to also foster spaces for positive engagement and support for students. Mutual respect, empathy, and constructive dialogue are necessary to balance individual freedom with communal responsibility.
