A tragic building collapse occurred at the Kannauj railway station in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday, January 11, 2025, around 2:30 PM IST, trapping approximately two dozen workers under the debris. The incident happened during beautification work on a two-storey structure, leading to immediate rescue efforts by local authorities. So far, six workers have been rescued and taken to the hospital for treatment, while investigations into the cause of the collapse are underway. Uttar Pradesh’s Social Welfare Minister Aseem Arun has assured that all resources are being utilized for the rescue operation.

Rescue Operations Underway

Emergency teams have been mobilised to the site of the collapse, which occurred during ongoing construction activities aimed at enhancing the Kannauj railway station. According to District Magistrate Shubhrant Kumar Shukl, around 35 workers were present when the ceiling slab of the under-construction building suddenly gave way. “Our first priority is to rescue the workers who are trapped. We are using all resources at our disposal for the rescue efforts,” he stated during a press briefing at the scene.

As of now, six individuals have been successfully rescued and transported to local hospitals for treatment, with their conditions being monitored closely. The rescue operation has been complicated by heavy debris and unstable structures, necessitating careful planning and execution by emergency responders.

Local authorities have deployed police and fire department personnel to assist in the rescue efforts. Witnesses reported scenes of panic as workers scrambled for safety when the structure collapsed. Eyewitness accounts describe a chaotic scene with cries for help echoing from beneath the rubble. Rescue teams are working diligently to clear debris using heavy machinery, while volunteers from the local community have also joined in to assist where possible.

Government Response and Investigation

In response to the incident, Uttar Pradesh’s Social Welfare Minister Aseem Arun visited the site to oversee ongoing rescue operations. He expressed deep concern for those affected and reaffirmed that their foremost responsibility is to save any remaining individuals trapped under the debris. “We are committed to ensuring that every possible effort is made to rescue those still missing,” he said during his visit. The minister also announced that an investigation would be launched to determine the cause of the collapse, which preliminary reports suggest may be linked to construction activities associated with a renovation scheme aimed at improving railway stations across Uttar Pradesh.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has also taken cognizance of the incident and directed officials to reach the site immediately to expedite relief efforts. He instructed that proper medical treatment be provided to the injured workers and expressed his wishes for their speedy recovery. Officials have indicated that safety protocols will be scrutinised as part of this investigation. There is growing concern regarding adherence to safety measures in construction projects, particularly those involving public infrastructure. Community members have voiced their worries about potential negligence and called for stricter regulations to prevent such incidents in the future.

Community Involvement and Support

As news of the collapse spread, local residents rushed to assist but were hindered by heavy debris and ongoing rescue operations. Many community members expressed their distress over the incident and offered support to families affected by this tragedy. The scene has drawn significant attention from both media and local citizens, highlighting not only the urgent need for effective safety measures on construction sites but also a sense of solidarity within the community.

Residents have begun organising support efforts for families of trapped workers, including food and shelter provisions for those waiting anxiously for news about their loved ones. The community’s response has been commendable, showcasing a collective spirit in times of crisis.
