A 25-year-old pregnant woman, Brajbala, died after allegedly being beaten by her husband, Ramu, during a domestic dispute over excess salt in food in Nagda Dhak village, Kasganj district, Uttar Pradesh, on Wednesday evening. The altercation escalated, resulting in Brajbala falling from the roof and sustaining fatal injuries.
She was rushed to hospital but succumbed during treatment on Thursday. Police have arrested Ramu, registered a case, and sent Brajbala’s body for post-mortem. The incident has reignited concerns about domestic violence, with Brajbala’s family alleging a history of abuse and an illicit affair as contributing factors.
Domestic Dispute Escalates to Tragedy
According to officials, a minor argument about excess salt in the meal quickly turned violent when Ramu allegedly assaulted Brajbala, who was five months pregnant. Family members rushed her to the district hospital, but due to her critical condition, she was referred to Aligarh Medical College, where she died during treatment.
Additional Superintendent of Police Rajesh Bharti confirmed, “A case has been registered against Ramu, and investigations are underway.” Ramu initially fled the scene but was apprehended by villagers outside the village and handed over to the police the same night.
Allegations of Ongoing Abuse and Community Response
Brajbala’s family alleges that she faced regular abuse from Ramu, often over trivial matters, and that he had an extramarital affair, which was a frequent cause of disputes. The victim’s brother stated that Ramu’s relationship with his sister-in-law and persistent dowry demands led to repeated violence since their marriage five years ago.
The family has named three people in their complaint, including Ramu, citing ongoing harassment and violence. Police have taken statements from both families, and Brajbala’s body has undergone a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
