Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced increases in three police allowances during Police Memorial Day celebrations in Lucknow on October 21, 2026, aiming to support personnel with some of the expenses associated with their duties.
The motorcycle allowance for sub-inspectors and inspectors deployed on field duty will rise from ₹700 to ₹1,000 per month, while the SIM allowance for field-deployed constables and head constables will increase from ₹2,000 to ₹2,500 per month. The uniform allowance for officers belonging to the Provincial Police Service (PPS) will rise from ₹6,400 to ₹15,000, with reports describing this as an allowance provided every five years.
The announcements came as the Chief Minister paid tribute to police personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty. Adityanath said police personnel’s alertness and dedication were central to establishing the rule of law. The revised benefits apply to specified categories rather than the entire police force. While the announcements signal a focus on personnel welfare, the implementation timeline and the practical impact of the increases remain to be established.
Allowances Revised
The three changes address different expenses linked to police work. According to reports, sub-inspectors and inspectors assigned to field duties will receive an additional ₹300 per month towards their motorcycle allowance, taking the total to ₹1,000.
For constables and head constables deployed in the field, the monthly SIM allowance will increase by ₹500, from ₹2,000 to ₹2,500. The uniform allowance for PPS officers will rise by ₹8,600, from ₹6,400 to ₹15,000, with reports indicating that this benefit is provided once every five years. These revisions are distinct from a general increase in basic salaries or a uniform allowance hike for every member of the force.
Addressing personnel at the Police Memorial Day event, Adityanath underlined the importance of police work in maintaining public safety. He said that the safe journey of a child to school, a woman leaving home without fear, a businessperson conducting business securely and a citizen receiving help during a crisis might appear ordinary, but these situations depend on the hard work, vigilance and responsibility of police personnel. His remarks highlighted the everyday public services that policing is expected to support.
However, the announcements do not independently establish whether the revised amounts will fully cover the expenses incurred by eligible personnel while performing their duties.

Welfare And Policing
The announcements were made during Police Memorial Day, observed on October 21 to honour police personnel who died in the line of duty. At the ceremony in Lucknow, Adityanath laid a wreath at the Police Martyrs Memorial, followed by tributes from senior administrative and police officials.
Reports also said that six families of police personnel who had died in the line of duty were honoured during the event. The occasion brought together remembrance of police sacrifices and announcements concerning the welfare of serving personnel. The Chief Minister described police alertness and dedication as the foundation of the rule of law in Uttar Pradesh. His address also included remarks on recruitment, training and the state’s law-and-order record, alongside criticism of the situation under previous governments.
These statements reflect the state government’s position on its policing approach and should be distinguished from independently assessed outcomes. The allowance increases nevertheless raise a wider question about the practical support available to personnel working in demanding conditions. Motorcycles may be important for mobility during field duties, while mobile communication helps officers coordinate and respond to situations. Uniform-related expenses are another aspect of professional service.
Yet allowances are only one part of police welfare, alongside staffing levels, working hours, training, equipment, mental well-being and access to adequate facilities. The latest reports confirm the announced amounts, but do not establish when the revised payments will begin or whether formal implementation orders have been issued.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
Police personnel are often the first point of contact for people facing emergencies, public disturbances or threats to their safety. Supporting them with appropriate equipment, fair working conditions and reasonable reimbursement for work-related expenses is therefore an important part of strengthening public services.
The Uttar Pradesh government’s allowance announcements acknowledge some of these practical needs, but their value will ultimately depend on effective implementation and whether the revised amounts adequately meet the expenses of eligible personnel. It is equally important to recognise that better allowances alone cannot guarantee better policing.
Public trust depends on a wider set of responsibilities, including professional conduct, accountability, sensitivity towards vulnerable communities, timely assistance and equal treatment under the law. Police welfare and public accountability should not be viewed as competing priorities: officers need institutional support to perform their duties, while citizens need confidence that authority will be exercised fairly and responsibly. As the state moves from announcing these increases to implementing them, clarity on eligibility, payment timelines and the applicable orders will matter.
The broader objective should be a police system in which personnel have the resources and working conditions needed to serve the public effectively, and people can approach the police with confidence that their concerns will be heard. How can governments improve police welfare while ensuring that better support also strengthens accountability, public trust and citizen-friendly policing?
