In a disturbing incident on Wednesday evening, Vishwakarma Chauhan shot his estranged wife Mamta Chauhan dead in the middle of a busy market in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. The attack occurred around 8 pm outside a photo studio on Jail Road, leaving bystanders horrified and helpless.

Mamta was rushed to a private hospital by onlookers but was declared dead on arrival by doctors. The accused did not flee but waited at the scene until police arrived and took him into custody. Authorities have launched a murder investigation, with personal disputes, including property issues, being explored as the likely motives.

The Shooting: Chaos in the Heart of the City

Eyewitnesses recount that the incident happened suddenly after a heated argument between the couple in a bustling market area. Vishwakarma, reportedly wearing a helmet, concealed a pistol which he used to fire two shots-one hitting Mamta in the chest and the other hitting her hand. Shoppers and vendors nearby watched in shock and panic as Mamta collapsed to the ground.

Many rushed to assist the injured woman and transported her to a private hospital, but she succumbed to the injuries on arrival. Residents expressed deep concern over the brazenness of the act in such a public space and the trauma it caused to families present at the scene.

Background: Strained Relations and Ongoing Disputes

Mamta and Vishwakarma had been married for 15 years but were living separately for approximately 18 months before the incident. Mamta resided with their 13-year-old daughter in rented accommodation near Geeta Vatika and was employed at a private company. Reports indicate that the couple had been embroiled in ongoing disputes, including property-related conflicts, which police are investigating as a potential trigger for the shooting.

The accused, once arrested, reportedly expressed to bystanders that he was “very troubled by her,” reflecting ongoing personal turmoil. Local police officials, including Shahpur Police Station SHO Neeraj Rai, confirmed that a formal case has been registered and are actively tracing all related details.

The Logical Indian’s Standpoint

This tragic episode starkly highlights how unresolved domestic conflicts can explode into devastating violence, causing irrevocable loss and community distress. The Logical Indian believes that violence is never the answer—especially within families, where empathy, understanding, and dialogue must be paramount.

The incident also raises urgent questions about societal and institutional support for vulnerable individuals caught in domestic strife. It is essential to strengthen counseling, prevention mechanisms, and safety nets that identify and assist those at risk before conflicts escalate to fatal outcomes. Public spaces and homes alike should be sanctuaries of safety, not scenes of horror.
