A double-decker sleeper bus carrying approximately 100 passengers overturned late Sunday evening on the Yamuna Expressway near Milestone 76 in Mathura, leaving more than 25 people injured. The accident occurred within the Naujheel police station limits as the heavily overloaded vehicle, travelling from Delhi to Bihar, reportedly flipped while negotiating a sharp turn at high speed.
Local authorities and emergency services reached the spot immediately to initiate rescue operations, transporting the victims to the Naujheel Community Health Centre and Mathura District Hospital. While several passengers remain in critical condition, no fatalities have been reported as of Monday morning.
Overloading and High Speed: A Recipe for Disaster
The ill-fated bus was packed nearly to double its capacity, a factor that officials believe significantly contributed to the driver losing control. According to eyewitness accounts, the vehicle was swaying due to the excessive load before it toppled over during a sudden maneuver.
Circle Officer (CO) Sandeep Singh confirmed the scale of the rescue, stating, “The police teams arrived on the spot immediately and rescued the passengers. Around 10-12 were initially sent for urgent care, with the total number of injured later exceeding 25.”
City Magistrate Anupam Mishra reassured the public that medical teams are working around the clock, noting that while the injuries are serious, the administration is providing all necessary support to ensure stability for those in the district hospital.
A Pattern of Peril on the Expressway
The Yamuna Expressway, while a vital artery for North Indian transit, has become notorious for such high-stakes accidents, particularly involving long-distance sleeper buses. This recent mishap highlights a persistent issue of “overloading,” where private operators often bypass safety regulations to maximise profit on the Delhi-Bihar route.
Following the crash, traffic on the Noida-Agra flank was briefly disrupted as cranes were deployed to right the massive vehicle. This incident follows a string of similar tragedies in the Mathura stretch, where high speed and driver fatigue often exacerbated by the lack of stringent checks on passenger limits continue to turn the expressway into a danger zone for migrant workers and families.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
At The Logical Indian, we believe that every journey should be anchored in the right to safety, yet time and again, we see human lives traded for a few extra tickets. The sight of a bus meant for 50 people carrying 100 is not just a traffic violation; it is a profound failure of empathy and corporate responsibility.
We urge the transport authorities to move beyond reactive compensation and implement rigorous, tech-driven checkpoints to stop overloaded vehicles before they enter high-speed corridors. Roads should connect us to our loved ones, not lead to trauma.
