The United States Embassy in New Delhi has issued a two-day demonstration alert advising American citizens to avoid Central Delhi through July 21 due to heightened security arrangements, ongoing protests and the Monsoon Session of Parliament.
The advisory warned that large gatherings, road closures, traffic diversions and an increased police presence could disrupt movement around Parliament House and nearby government districts. It urged US nationals to avoid demonstration sites, monitor local media, allow extra travel time and follow instructions from Indian authorities.
The alert comes amid protests linked to the “Sansad Chalo” march organised by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) and supporters of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, during which Delhi Police imposed restrictions, erected barricades and intensified security across central parts of the capital.
While the embassy described the advisory as a precautionary measure to help its citizens stay safe, Delhi Police maintained that the restrictions were necessary to ensure security during Parliament’s Monsoon Session and manage large public gatherings.
Heightened Security Across Delhi
The advisory reflects the heightened security environment that has accompanied the opening days of Parliament’s Monsoon Session, traditionally one of the busiest periods in Delhi’s administrative calendar.
According to the US Embassy, demonstrations can arise with little warning and may affect movement around Parliament House, India Gate, Janpath, Connaught Place and adjoining government offices. The embassy advised American citizens to avoid protest locations, expect heavy traffic congestion and road closures, and remain alert while travelling through the city.
Delhi Police also issued an extensive traffic advisory, urging commuters to avoid Central Delhi unless necessary. Several roads around Parliament House, Vijay Chowk and adjoining administrative zones witnessed diversions, while additional police personnel were deployed to regulate traffic and maintain law and order. Authorities temporarily restricted access to certain Delhi Metro stations and recommended alternative travel routes to minimise congestion.
The advisory follows demonstrations that coincided with the Monsoon Session, including the “Sansad Chalo” march organised by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) in support of Sonam Wangchuk’s ongoing movement over Ladakh-related demands.
Thousands of protesters attempted to march towards Parliament on July 20 before being stopped by police barricades. Delhi Police later declared the march unlawful under prohibitory orders in parts of Central Delhi, citing security concerns arising from Parliament being in session. Security personnel used barricades, tear gas and baton charges to disperse crowds after protesters attempted to move beyond designated areas.
The US Embassy did not cite any specific threat targeting American citizens. Instead, it described the alert as a routine security advisory intended to help travellers navigate disruptions caused by demonstrations and enhanced policing. Such advisories are regularly issued by diplomatic missions worldwide whenever large public gatherings, political events or civil unrest could affect the safety or mobility of their citizens abroad.
Protests Coincide With Parliament Session
This year’s Monsoon Session has unfolded against the backdrop of several politically charged demonstrations in the national capital. Apart from protests linked to Sonam Wangchuk’s campaign seeking constitutional safeguards for Ladakh, Delhi has also witnessed demonstrations over issues including examination-related concerns, education reforms and other public grievances.
These gatherings have increased pressure on law enforcement agencies responsible for balancing citizens’ right to peaceful protest with security requirements around Parliament.
Police have repeatedly stated that while peaceful demonstrations are permitted at designated locations, attempts to march towards Parliament or enter high-security zones cannot be allowed during the session. Authorities argue that the restrictions are aimed at ensuring public safety, protecting government institutions and preventing disruptions to parliamentary proceedings.
The latest US Embassy advisory also comes at a time when several foreign missions routinely monitor local developments and issue travel advisories based on prevailing security conditions. Such alerts are common during elections, large festivals, political demonstrations and natural disasters, and are generally precautionary rather than indicative of any specific security threat.
