In a remarkable display of honesty, Rita Devi, a farmer’s wife from Devganj village in Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh, requested the Bank of India to withdraw nearly Rs 10 crore ($9,99,49,588$) that was erroneously credited to her account. The discovery occurred on March 28, 2026, during the Navratri festival, when her son visited an ATM to generate a PIN.
Despite the life-changing sum appearing on the screen, the family, which relies on agriculture and a small grocery shop, immediately flagged the discrepancy. Bank officials have since attributed the staggering balance to a technical error involving a “lien” marked against a loan account rather than an actual cash credit
Honesty Over Windfall
The incident came to light when Rita Devi received a mobile alert while working in her fields, showing a balance that far exceeded her usual savings of approximately Rs 45,000. To verify the surreal figures, she and her son, Arun Kumar, visited a nearby ATM where they filmed the screen displaying the eight-figure sum.
“We don’t know whose money it is. Whoever it belongs to should take it back,” Rita stated, maintaining a firm stance that her family would not touch a single rupee of the unearned fortune.
Pushpendra Singh, the branch manager at Bank of India’s Sultanganj branch, later clarified the situation, stating, “Upon checking the account, the claimed balance was not actually there; the display was a result of a technical glitch related to a loan account entry.”
A Pattern of Banking Glitches
This event follows a string of similar technical anomalies across India’s digital banking infrastructure, where software “liens” internal bank holds sometimes reflect as massive credits on user-facing interfaces. In this case, the bank was initially closed for a public holiday when the family first tried to report the error, leading to the video of the ATM balance going viral on social media.
Neighbors and local residents in Mainpuri have since lauded the family’s integrity, noting that in an era of digital scams and financial desperation, the couple’s immediate reaction was one of concern and responsibility rather than celebration.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
At The Logical Indian, we believe that stories like Rita Devi’s serve as a powerful testament to the enduring strength of human ethics. In a world often driven by material gain, choosing “enough” over “excess” is a quiet but profound act of social harmony.
Rita’s refusal to exploit a systemic failure highlights a level of character that no amount of money can buy. However, this incident also underscores a critical need for our banking institutions to fortify their digital systems; technical “glitches” of this magnitude can cause unnecessary panic or legal complications for innocent citizens. We celebrate Rita’s honesty and hope her story inspires others to lead with empathy and truth.
