In a shocking case of medical negligence at Meerut’s Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial Medical College in Uttar Pradesh on the night of July 27-28, 2025, Sunil, a 30-year-old road accident victim from Hasanpur Kala village, died after allegedly being left untreated while two junior doctors slept in the emergency ward.

A viral video surfaced showing junior doctor Bhupesh Kumar Rai sleeping with his feet on a table, ignoring the critically injured patient lying covered in blood on a stretcher. The hospital swiftly suspended the two doctors and formed a three-member inquiry committee, while district authorities launched a probe amid public outrage.

Hospital officials and family members remain at odds over delays in treatment, spotlighting long-standing concerns about healthcare accountability in government facilities.

Doctors Asleep While Patient Cries for Help: Unfolding Tragedy at Meerut’s LLRM Hospital

Sunil was rushed to the emergency ward following a traumatic road accident that left him with severe leg injuries and profuse bleeding. Despite his critical condition, a viral video caught in the Uttar Pradesh hospital shows junior doctors Bhupesh Kumar Rai and Aniket asleep in the ward—one reclining by the air conditioner, feet casually resting on a table.

Meanwhile, Sunil lay unattended on the stretcher, blood covering his clothes, with family members and bystanders pleading for urgent help. Hospital duty-in-charge Dr Shashank Jindal was reportedly off duty at the time, arriving only after complaints surfaced.

Sunil’s family alleges gross medical negligence as a cause for his death, which reportedly occurred around 8 am on July 28, while officials claim his injuries were critical upon arrival. The hospital has already suspended the two juniors pending inquiry.

Systemic Failures and Calls for Transparency: Context and Aftermath

This distressing incident has reignited public debate about the widespread challenges facing government hospitals in Uttar Pradesh and beyond. Issues such as understaffing, lack of supervision, fatigue among medical personnel, and weak enforcement of medical ethics are often cited as root causes of such negligence.

LLRM Medical College has faced similar controversies before, including prior suspensions of doctors connected to mistreatment allegations in 2023, underscoring the need for systemic reforms. The district magistrate has ordered a thorough investigation, promising strict action based on findings. In the meantime, Sunil’s family continues to demand justice and better safeguards to protect vulnerable patients in public healthcare systems.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

This heart-wrenching case exposes cracks in the healthcare system that exact the greatest toll on those who rely on government hospitals—often the poorest and most helpless. Medical professionals, despite heavy pressures, must never lose sight of their duty to save lives and provide compassionate care.

At the same time, institutions must create structures that support doctors, ensuring they are alert, adequately rested, and held accountable. The Logical Indian urges both governmental authorities and society at large to advocate for reforms that prioritise patient dignity and safety without exception.
