In a major pre-festive crackdown ahead of Raksha Bandhan, UP’s Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) raided an unlicensed commercial sweet manufacturing facility operating inside a cattle shed in Kakori, Lucknow.
Authorities discovered appalling sanitary violations, where confectionery was prepared right beside 40 to 50 tethered buffaloes amidst flies, stagnant drain water, and dung splatter. The enforcement team earmarked 2,675 kg of contaminated confections for destruction, confiscated 686 kg of raw ingredients worth ₹79,000, dispatched 15 samples for laboratory testing, and ordered the immediate shutdown of the premises.
Shocking Lapses
During the inspection at Shivachhi Sweets in Kakori’s Hardoiya Lalnagar, UP enforcement officials witnessed egregious disregard for consumer health.
Thousands of kilograms of prepared confections—including kalakand, doda barfi, and peda—lay exposed to swarms of insects and airborne contaminants, while 1,000 litres of sweet syrup kept in unwashed plastic containers contained dead flies. “The visual conditions were hazardous; preparing edible sweets alongside livestock without basic barriers compromises public safety at an alarming scale,” an inspecting food safety officer noted on site.
In addition to 15 food samples sent for statutory chemical analysis, investigators impounded suspicious chemical whitening powders, alum, and substandard milk powders, sealing off the unit to prevent unsafe goods from reaching local market stalls.
Festive Adulteration Risks
Festive periods in India often witness an acute surge in the demand for dairy-based delicacies, creating a fertile ground for unscrupulous manufacturers to bypass standard health protocols in pursuit of quick margins.
Investigations revealed that the Kakori unit held only a basic retail licence yet was running a mass-scale production kitchen with untrained workers lacking mandatory medical fitness certificates or protective gear. Food safety analysts and consumer protection experts advise buyers to exercise heightened vigilance during festival seasons: inspect physical premises before placing bulk orders, avoid unnaturally bright or intensely white sweets that may indicate industrial chemical bleaches, and prioritise certified vendors who display valid Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) compliance registrations.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
Festivals are meant to foster celebration, community bonding, and collective goodwill; transforming these sacred occasions into avenues for profit through adulterated and toxic food strikes at the very heart of public trust and empathy.
As conscious citizens, we must cultivate a culture where human health and dignity supersede commercial shortcuts and neglect. Strict regulatory enforcement is essential, but equally vital is a proactive and informed consumer collective that actively demands transparency, calls out unethical production, and refuses to patronise unhygienic practices. How can communities and regulatory authorities work more closely together to ensure that festival celebrations remain safe, healthy, and ethical for every family?
