An FIR has been registered against the principal and an assistant teacher of a PM SHRI school in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, over allegations of promoting religious practices within the campus. According to officials, the case gained attention after viral videos surfaced on social media, prompting a surprise inspection that led to suspensions and a district-level inquiry.
Authorities are now focusing on whether institutional lapses and administrative oversight allowed the alleged conduct to go unchecked, alongside examining possible violations of secular norms in government schools.
Viral Videos Spark Probe Into Institutional Lapses
According to district officials, the controversy at a PM SHRI Vidyalaya in Jalal Sarai, Sambhal, initially emerged after videos and photographs circulated online, allegedly showing students participating in religious expressions within school premises. Following public complaints and social media attention, the education department conducted a surprise inspection, which led to immediate administrative action.
Principal Mohammad Anzar Ahmad and assistant teacher Mohammad Gul Ejaz have been booked following allegations that religious practices were being informally encouraged within classrooms, including students wearing religious attire during school hours. Officials said the FIR was registered at Nakhasa police station after preliminary findings pointed to possible deviations from expected school conduct standards.
A senior district official, speaking to PTI, confirmed that a three-member inquiry committee under the Chief Development Officer has been formed. The panel will not only examine the role of the two accused teachers but also assess whether proper monitoring mechanisms were in place within the institution. Both educators have been suspended pending investigation.

Focus Shifts To Administrative Oversight
While initial attention centred on the alleged conduct of the staff, officials have now expanded the scope of inquiry to include possible administrative lapses. Authorities are examining whether the school leadership and monitoring systems failed to prevent or report the alleged incidents in time, raising concerns about internal supervision in government-run institutions.
The district administration has indicated that the investigation will also evaluate compliance with the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 and service conduct rules applicable to government school employees. Officials noted that maintaining a neutral learning environment is a core responsibility under schemes like PM SHRI, which aim to strengthen public education infrastructure while upholding constitutional values.
At the time of reporting, neither of the accused teachers has issued a public statement. Authorities have urged restraint, stating that conclusions will only be drawn after the inquiry is completed.
Accountability And School Governance Under Scrutiny
The incident has widened the conversation beyond individual conduct to systemic accountability in schools. Education experts note that while attention often focuses on frontline teachers, institutional responsibility and oversight structures play a crucial role in ensuring compliance with secular and inclusive norms.
Government-run schools are expected to maintain strict neutrality, and any perceived deviation—intentional or otherwise, can quickly escalate into broader public controversy, especially in the age of viral social media content. This case adds to a growing number of incidents where administrative systems are being scrutinised alongside individual actions.
Officials involved in the probe have reiterated that the objective is to determine facts objectively, including whether the incident reflects deliberate conduct or gaps in supervision and awareness of prescribed guidelines.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
At The Logical Indian, we believe that ensuring accountability in education must go beyond individual blame and include a careful examination of institutional systems and oversight mechanisms. Schools must remain spaces of trust, where both students and educators operate within clearly defined, inclusive and constitutionally aligned frameworks.
At the same time, it is essential that investigations remain fair, evidence-based, and free from preconceived judgments, ensuring dignity for all involved while upholding public confidence in the education system. Constructive reform not reactive blame should guide the response to such sensitive incidents. This case raises an important question about governance in schools: Are our current monitoring systems strong enough to prevent such controversies, or do they need structural reform to ensure true institutional accountability?
