A 27-year-old man was arrested by Uttar Pradesh Police on Monday, December 2, for allegedly raping a 70-year-old woman under Anpara police station limits of Sonbhadra district. The woman’s grandson registered a complaint saying she was sexually assaulted while she was alone at home.

The accused, Ram Kishan, allegedly committed the crime on December 1.

“The FIR was registered as soon as we got the information. The accused has been arrested. The woman is under treatment,” India Today quoted the Circle Officer as saying, while sharing the details of the case.

On Monday, December 2, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav slammed Uttar Pradesh government over the issue of increasing crimes against women, saying that “women and daughters are not safe under BJP rule”.

“In Uttar Pradesh, the condition of women is getting worse day by day. Every day, there are incidents of rape. The alleged campaigners of Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao have failed to check “inhuman incidents” even after being in power. Even minor girls are becoming victims of cruelty,” the former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister said, citing various cases of crime against women in the state.

This incident comes just days after the brutal rape and murder of a woman in Hyderabad. Protests have erupted across the country, with people seeking justice and stringent laws to ensure women’s safety.
