The Uttar Pradesh government has increased the monthly honorarium of Anganwadi Workers and Helpers, citing their expanding responsibilities in childcare, nutrition, early education and digital monitoring. Under the new order issued by the Women Welfare and Child Development Department, Anganwadi Workers will receive an additional ₹4,000 per month in the state’s share, taking their total honorarium from ₹8,000 to ₹12,000.
Helpers will get an additional ₹2,000, raising their monthly honorarium from ₹4,000 to ₹6,000. The revised rates will be effective from September 2026, with the increased amount to be paid from October 2026. The decision, announced by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in Ayodhya on September 8, is expected to benefit around 2.91 lakh Anganwadi Workers and Helpers across the state.
The government has also announced ₹5 lakh annual cashless healthcare coverage for workers, helpers and their families, along with other welfare measures.
What Changes
The revised honorarium reflects a significant increase in the state contribution to Anganwadi personnel. According to the government order issued by Additional Chief Secretary, Women Welfare and Child Development, Leena Johri, the ₹4,000 increase for Workers comprises ₹1,500 as additional fixed honorarium and ₹2,500 as additional variable Performance-Linked Incentive (PLI) honorarium.
For Helpers, the ₹2,000 increase comprises ₹750 in additional fixed honorarium and ₹1,250 in additional variable PLI honorarium. This takes the combined monthly honorarium to ₹12,000 for Workers and ₹6,000 for Helpers. The department said the decision takes into account their increased responsibilities, including Early Childhood Care and Education, nutrition services, the growing use of digital platforms and coordination with various government schemes.
An official said the hike was made “in view of the increased work responsibilities” of Anganwadi Workers and Helpers and their expanding role in delivering essential services at the grassroots level.

The honorarium revision follows Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s announcement at an Anganwadi felicitation programme in Ayodhya on September 8. Addressing around 12,000 workers and helpers, he said the monthly honorarium for Workers had risen from ₹3,000 in 2017 to ₹8,000 and would now increase to ₹12,000. Helpers, whose honorarium had earlier risen from ₹1,500 to ₹4,000, will now receive ₹6,000.
The Chief Minister also announced cashless medical treatment of up to ₹5 lakh annually for Workers, Helpers and their families, as well as three sarees for workers instead of two. The government has additionally announced plans to equip Anganwadi centres with smartphones and real-time data systems. Adityanath highlighted the role played by Anganwadi Workers, Helpers, ANMs and ASHA workers during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in village-level screening and public health work.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
Anganwadi Workers and Helpers are among the frontline workers who connect government welfare programmes with families in their communities. Their responsibilities extend beyond childcare, covering nutrition, early learning, health awareness, record-keeping and coordination with multiple public schemes.
A higher honorarium and stronger social protection are therefore meaningful steps towards recognising the value of this work. At the same time, financial support should be accompanied by timely payments, safe and dignified working conditions, adequate resources and genuine opportunities for workers to voice their concerns.
Welfare measures are most effective when they recognise frontline workers not merely as beneficiaries of policy, but as essential partners in building healthier and more equitable communities. As Uttar Pradesh expands its investment in Anganwadi services, what more can governments do to ensure these workers receive the dignity, security and support their work deserves?
