“Uninformed, Inappropriate Remarks”: MEA Responds After Donald Trump Reposts Controversial Video on Indian Immigrants

India strongly criticised derogatory remarks about its people while reaffirming that India–US ties remain rooted in mutual respect and shared interests.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has officially condemned a derogatory social media post targeting Indian immigrants in the United States, labelling it “uninformed, inappropriate, and in poor taste.” The controversy erupted after a video, originally featuring right-wing commentator Michael Savage and subsequently amplified by US President Donald Trump on Truth Social, described India as a “hellhole” and suggested immigrants lack loyalty to America.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasised that such remarks do not reflect the reality of the robust India-US partnership. While the US Embassy in New Delhi reportedly attempted damage control by highlighting past positive comments about the bilateral bond, the Indian Opposition has criticised the government for not lodging a more formal, high-level protest

Diplomacy Amidst Derogatory Rhetoric

In a weekly press briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal provided a measured yet firm rebuttal to the viral content. “We have seen the comments… the remarks are obviously uninformed, inappropriate and in poor taste,” Jaiswal stated, adding that they stand in stark contrast to a relationship “based on mutual respect and shared interests.”

The post in question featured a transcript suggesting that “gangsters with laptops” from India and China were “robbing” the US. The clip further criticised birthright citizenship, alleging that families from “hellhole” countries exploit legal loopholes. Despite the provocative nature of the claims, the MEA initially offered a brief “no comment” before issuing this more detailed clarification to address the growing public and political outcry.

A Pattern of Polarising Commentary

This incident is not an isolated case of friction regarding immigration rhetoric. The video shared by the US President originated from The Savage Nation, where host Michael Savage expressed frustration over Supreme Court arguments regarding citizenship. Historically, while President Trump has frequently referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “great friend,” his political messaging often pivots toward strict anti-immigrant sentiment to appeal to his domestic base.

Domestically, the Congress party and other Opposition leaders have seized the moment to question the government’s “silence,” with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge asking why the matter hasn’t been raised at the highest diplomatic levels. This development comes at a sensitive time when both nations are navigating complex trade and geopolitical alignments.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

At The Logical Indian, we believe that the dignity of a nation and its people should never be sacrificed at the altar of political rhetoric or social media engagement. Referring to any country as a “hellhole” or its diaspora as “gangsters” undermines the spirit of global harmony and ignores the immense contributions of the Indian community to the American fabric.

In an interconnected world, leadership requires the grace to foster dialogue rather than division. While diplomatic restraint is often necessary, it is equally vital to stand firm against xenophobia to ensure that the “mutual respect” we speak of is practiced as much as it is preached. We must strive for a world where empathy replaces prejudice and constructive conversation triumphs over “poor taste” provocations.
