Kanhaiya Narayan Baurashi, a 42-year-old unemployed resident of Ganpatinagar in Mankapur, Nagpur, was arrested for repeatedly chain-snatching to pay court-mandated monthly alimony of Rs 6,000 to his ex-wife. The case came to light after a 74-year-old woman, Jayshree Jaykumar Gade, reported her gold chain was stolen by a bike-borne thief in Manishnagar on February 22, 2025.

Investigations using technical surveillance and local intelligence led police to Baurashi, who confessed to at least four such robberies committed over recent months due to his financial desperation caused by two years of unemployment. Authorities recovered 10 grams of gold jewellery valued at Rs 1.85 lakh, the motorcycle and helmet used, and a mobile phone during searches.

Desperation Leads to Crime: Chain-Snatching to Pay Alimony

Kanhaiya Narayan Baurashi, under police surveillance and a tip-off, was arrested by Nagpur’s Crime Branch during a probe into recent chain-snatching incidents. Baurashi confessed to five thefts over several months, citing two years of unemployment and the burden of legally mandated alimony payments to his first wife as motivating factors.

During interrogation, he revealed that he sold some stolen gold to Amardeep Krishnarao Nakhate, owner of Shri Sai Jewellers on Godhani Road, who was also apprehended by the police. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Sudhir Kumar confirmed the recovery of 10.94 grams of gold worth about Rs 1.85 lakh, a Honda Shine motorcycle, a mobile phone, and helmet used in the crimes.

Case Background and Wider Investigation

The initial complaint filed by Jayshree Jaykumar Gade, aged 74, at Beltarodi Police Station triggered a wider crime investigation. She reported that in Manishnagar, a man on a motorcycle snatched her gold chain valued at approximately Rs 80,000. The police slapped charges under Section 392 (robbery) of the Indian Penal Code.

Further investigation linked Baurashi to two other chain-snatching cases in Beltarodi and two in Ajni jurisdictions. The police are continuing their probe for additional leads while ensuring seized items and suspects are processed under proper legal procedures. This case highlights the impacts of socio-economic pressures, illustrating the thin lines some people cross under distress.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

The Logical Indian underscores this story’s serious reflections on societal challenges, especially the intersection of financial hardship and moral boundaries.

While crime cannot be condoned, we recognise the desperation that unemployment and family pressures can impose. It highlights the urgent need for better social support systems, accessible mental health services, and financial counselling for those struggling.
