A 28-year-old e-rickshaw driver, Vivek Kanaujia, was allegedly beaten to death by his wife’s family on 22 June 2026 in Badruddinpur village, Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh, over an ongoing dispute regarding their May 2024 love marriage. While the victim’s family and his traumatised wife, Poonam, maintain that her father, uncle, and brothers launched a coordinated, fatal ambush with sticks and canes upon their return from Noida, the accused family had long warned them against setting foot in the village.
In the latest developments, the Hardoi Police have registered a murder case against seven named individuals, actively detaining two key suspects, Ramgopal and Shyam, while launching manhunts to track down the remaining five fleeing relatives.
The Backstory: A Defiant Union
The tragedy traces its origins back to May 2024, when Vivek Kanaujia married Poonam against the fierce opposition of both their families. Knowing that their lives were at risk due to continuous harassment and local hostility regarding their self-chosen marriage, the young couple fled their native village in Hardoi.
They sought refuge in Noida, near Delhi, where Vivek worked to build a modest life for his family. Over the next two years, the couple welcomed a son. Believing that time might have softened the edges of resentment, and wishing to reconnect with their roots, Vivek and Poonam made the fateful decision to return to Badruddinpur village along with their seven-month-old infant.

A group from Poonam’s maternal family consisting of her father, uncle, and brothers—reached the house where the couple was staying. As the attackers targeted her husband, Poonam managed to break away, fleeing to a neighbour’s house to save herself and her infant son. She eventually reached another relative’s home, from where the authorities were alerted.

The very evening before the fatal attack, Vivek had approached the Behta Gokul police station to lodge an official complaint against his in-laws, alleging physical harassment and an immediate threat to his life. A case had been registered based on his complaint, but before preventive actions could fully materialize, the family struck.
Following the brutal thrashing, a responding police team rushed a critically injured Vivek to a local medical college for emergency treatment. However, the internal and external trauma proved too severe, and doctors subsequently declared him dead.
