The Centre on Monday wrote to Twitter directing it to suspend a list of accounts which are involved in spreading fake news.

The action comes after some of the Twitter handles, one of which belonged to separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani, were seen posting fake news on the Kashmir situation. As per an India Today report, some of the twitter handles mentioned by the Centre are,

  • @kashmir787 — Voice of Kashmir
  • @Red4Kashmir — MadihaShakil Khan
  • @arsched — Arshad Sharif
  • @mscully94 — Mary Scully
  • @sageelaniii — Syed Ali Geelani
  • @sadaf2k19
  • @RiazKha61370907
  • @RiazKha723

While @sageelaniii, @sadaf2k19, @RiazKha61370907 are suspended, while the first four accounts are still active. One surprising account is ‘@arsched’, a verified account of Arshad Sharif who is a programme host on TV channel ARY News.

The J&K police in a tweet said they are monitoring the situation and keeping a keen eye on the social media content being circulated.

The police in a tweet also rebutted a Pakistani politician Rehman Malik who reposted an old video and claiming it to be of the present-day Kashmir.

While social media is being monitored, restrictions have been removed from Jammu, the communication blackout in the valley still continues.
