Trump Orders Major Strike On Iran’s Kharg Island Oil Export Hub; Warns On Hormuz Disruption

The US says it bombed Iran’s strategic Kharg Island, hitting military sites while sparing oil infrastructure.

United States President Donald Trump has announced that US forces carried out what he described as one of the “most powerful bombing raids” in Middle Eastern history on Iran’s strategic Kharg Island in the Persian Gulf. According to Trump, the operation targeted and “totally obliterated” military facilities on the island while deliberately avoiding damage to oil export infrastructure, which handles the majority of Iran’s crude shipments.

The announcement was made late Friday via Truth Social, with Trump warning that the US could strike the island’s oil facilities if Iran interferes with global shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. The strike comes amid a rapidly escalating regional conflict involving the United States, Iran and Israel, which has already seen missile and drone attacks, troop deployments and rising concerns about disruptions to global oil supplies and regional stability.

US Claims Major Strike On Iran’s Key Oil Export Hub

Kharg Island is widely regarded as the centre of Iran’s oil export network, handling roughly 90% of the country’s crude shipments and serving as a vital economic lifeline for Tehran. Located about 15 miles off Iran’s coast, the island hosts major oil terminals, storage tanks and military installations that protect the shipping route through the Persian Gulf.

In a social media statement announcing the strike, Trump said the US Central Command had conducted a large-scale operation targeting military infrastructure on the island. “Moments ago, at my direction, the United States Central Command executed one of the most powerful bombing raids in the history of the Middle East, and totally obliterated every military target in Iran’s crown jewel, Kharg Island,” he wrote.

Trump added that while US forces possess the capability to destroy the island’s oil facilities, the administration had chosen not to do so “for reasons of decency.” However, he warned that the decision could change if Iran attempts to disrupt shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime passage for global energy trade.

Trump also used the announcement to issue strong warnings to Tehran, asserting that Iran had “no ability to defend anything that we want to attack.” In a separate post, he claimed that Iran’s alleged ambitions to dominate the Middle East and destroy Israel were now “dead.” The US President framed the strike as a strategic blow against Iran’s military capabilities while attempting to avoid immediate damage to global energy infrastructure that could trigger wider economic repercussions.

Escalating Conflict And Global Energy Concerns

The bombing of Kharg Island marks a major escalation in the ongoing regional conflict that began in late February with coordinated US and Israeli strikes on Iranian targets. Since then, hostilities have expanded across the Middle East, involving missile launches, drone attacks and cross-border strikes between Iran, Israel and allied groups. Iran has continued launching missile and drone attacks across the region and has attempted to restrict or disrupt maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz a critical global chokepoint through which roughly one-fifth of the world’s traded oil passes.

The United States has responded by strengthening its military presence in the region. Reports indicate that thousands of additional Marines, along with amphibious naval assets, have been deployed to the Middle East as part of a broader effort to secure shipping routes and deter further Iranian attacks. Analysts say the strike on Kharg Island could have significant economic implications, as the island’s export facilities are central to Iran’s energy revenues. Even though oil infrastructure was not directly targeted in the latest raid, markets remain volatile amid fears that further escalation could disrupt global oil supply and push prices higher.

Meanwhile, tensions on the ground continue to rise across the region. Iranian leaders have warned that attacks on their energy infrastructure could trigger retaliation against US-linked oil assets and military bases in the Gulf. The broader conflict has already resulted in thousands of casualties and the displacement of civilians across several countries, highlighting the growing humanitarian impact of the confrontation.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

The escalating conflict involving the United States, Iran and Israel illustrates how quickly geopolitical rivalries can spiral into crises with global consequences. Military strikes on strategic energy infrastructure, threats to vital shipping routes and mounting retaliatory rhetoric risk deepening instability not only in the Middle East but also across global economies that rely heavily on Gulf oil supplies. Beyond the political narratives and strategic calculations, it is often ordinary civilians who bear the greatest burden of war facing displacement, economic hardship and the constant threat of violence.
