A landmark gathering of world leaders, including US President Donald Trump, Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, India’s KV Singh, and representatives from 17 other countries, convened in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, on October 13, 2025.

The summit aimed to reinforce the Gaza ceasefire, discuss peace and reconstruction plans following two years of devastating conflict, and secure humanitarian aid delivery. The historic event was co-chaired by Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi. Major progress was marked by the safe release of all remaining Israeli hostages by Hamas and about 1,700 Palestinian prisoners freed by Israel.

However, challenges such as full ceasefire enforcement, Gaza governance, and political disagreements remain, with key parties like Israel and Hamas absent from direct talks.

A Historic Gathering Backed by Global Leaders

The Egypt Peace Summit attracted a broad coalition of global leaders, underscoring the urgency and international consensus to resolve the Gaza crisis. Prominent figures included Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani.

US President Donald Trump declared the peace agreement a “new and beautiful day” that marks a historic breakthrough after years of unresolved conflict. Egyptian President el-Sissi honoured Trump with Egypt’s highest distinction, praising his unparalleled role in steering the region toward peace.

Amidst solemn deliberations, a light-hearted moment occurred when Trump complimented Prime Minister Meloni as a “beautiful young woman,” highlighting camaraderie amongst political leaders. The joint signing of the ceasefire plan formalised a multilateral commitment to stabilise Gaza and facilitate its rebuilding.

Shehbaz Sharif praises Trump’s peace efforts

At the Egypt Peace Summit, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised US President Donald Trump extensively, calling him a “man of peace” and crediting him for his leadership in brokering the Gaza ceasefire as well as preventing escalation between India and Pakistan earlier in 2025. Sharif stated, “Peace has been achieved after untiring efforts led by President Trump who is genuinely a man of peace, who has relentlessly worked day in and day out to make this world a place to live in peace and prosperity.”

He also announced Pakistan’s nomination of Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in stopping the India-Pakistan conflict and facilitating the Gaza ceasefire, describing Trump as “the man the world needed most at this point in time”.

From India, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh represented the country at the summit. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was invited but chose to deputise the Minister instead. India welcomed the Gaza ceasefire and praised the peace efforts, though it has not endorsed some of Trump’s claims regarding mediation between India and Pakistan. KV Singh was among the key Indian representatives contributing to the discussions on the region’s peace and rehabilitation post-conflict.

Background and Complexities of the Conflict

The summit follows a ceasefire negotiated in Qatar that halted two years of intense war initiated by Hamas’s attacks in 2023. The conflict displaced thousands, devastated Gaza’s infrastructure, and caused acute humanitarian crises. Israeli forces have partially withdrawn from Gaza, allowing displaced residents to return home, while international aid is beginning to flow after prolonged blockage.

Nonetheless, governance issues pose significant challenges. Israel refuses to accept Palestinian Authority involvement in Gaza, complicating prospects for legitimate civil administration and peacebuilding. The absence of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, due to observance of a Jewish holiday, and Iran’s refusal to participate highlighted enduring political rifts.

Delegates agreed that the next peace phase must focus on disarmament of Hamas and wider political reforms, but tensions remain, especially with families demanding full repatriation of all hostages, including those deceased.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

The Egypt Peace Summit exemplifies how diplomatic persistence and inclusive global engagement remain essential tools in addressing long-standing regional conflicts. While the absence of direct combatants from talks underscores challenges ahead, the gathering’s collaborative spirit and tangible achievements reflect hope for gradual reconciliation and rebuilding.

The Logical Indian advocates for sustained empathy, honest dialogue, and kindness as societal principles that can underpin peace efforts. Genuine peace transcends agreements; it is nurtured through patience, understanding, and active support from both leaders and citizens. As the world watches, constructive involvement by global citizens is crucial to uphold and advance such initiatives.
