Ministry of Culture Unveils Nationwide Expansion Of Science Museums Under SPoCS Scheme

In a bid to foster a culture of scientific curiosity and knowledge across the country, the Ministry of Culture, under the Scheme for Promotion of Culture of Science (SPoCS), has initiated the development of new science centers and museums. Spearheading this transformative initiative is the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India, acting as the implementing agency for this ambitious scheme.

Over the past four years, the SPoCS Scheme has witnessed the establishment of several cutting-edge science museums and centers, enhancing accessibility for the public, including school and college students. Detailed information on the new science museums opened during this period, categorized by state and year, is provided in the annexure.

Among the notable additions is the Palampur Science Centre in Himachal Pradesh, inaugurated on May 14, 2022, reflecting the government's commitment to bringing science education to diverse regions of the country.

Additionally, the NCSM has successfully developed and handed over Science Centers and Museums to various states and union territories. Noteworthy mentions include the Bargarh Science Centre in Odisha, inaugurated on January 21, 2020, the Udaypur Science Centre in Tripura, established on February 28, 2021, and the Sub-Regional Science Centre in Bodhgaya, Bihar, inaugurated on July 20, 2023.

To encourage active participation and engagement, NCSM Science Centres organize a myriad of annual programs for school and college students. These encompass Science Fairs, Science Seminars, Science Drama, Science Demonstration Lectures, and Travelling Science Exhibitions, providing a dynamic platform for young minds to delve into the wonders of science.

Furthermore, students below the age of 15 years enjoy free entry to all ASI site museums, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder their access to these educational and cultural hubs. On special occasions, local school students are invited to partake in various cultural events, competitions, heritage walks, fostering a holistic approach to science and culture.

Union Minister for Culture, Tourism, and Development of Northeastern Region, Shri G. Kishan Reddy, shared this information in the Rajya Sabha today, underscoring the government's commitment to nurturing a scientifically literate and culturally enriched society.

The nationwide expansion of science museums under the SPoCS Scheme signifies a commendable effort by the Ministry of Culture and the NCSM to democratize access to scientific knowledge. As these centers continue to proliferate across states and union territories, they stand as beacons of educational empowerment, inviting citizens of all ages to embark on a journey of discovery and intellectual exploration.
