Know About Pragpur, India's Charming Heritage Village In Himachal Pradesh

Nestled in the embrace of the Dhauladhar range, Pragpur, a quaint village in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, has secured its place as India's first Heritage Village. Developed three centuries ago, Pragpur, along with the neighboring Garli, holds the esteemed title of a "Heritage Village," as declared by a State Government notification on December 9, 1997. This recognition adds a new chapter to the rich history and cultural significance of Pragpur.

Founded in the late 16th century by the Patials, Pragpur holds a deep connection to the principality of Jaswan. The village was established in memory of Princess Prag Dei of the Jaswan Royal family. Legend has it that a band of learned men, led by Kuthiala Sood, was entrusted by the chief of Jaswan to find a suitable place to honor Princess Prag. Thus, Pragpur came into existence, showcasing its timeless charm through cobblestone streets, mud-plastered walls, and slate-roofed houses.

Unique Architecture & Recognition

Pragpur stands as an ornamental village, its narrow streets adorned with fort-like houses, havelis, and villas that echo the area's aged charisma. This unique architecture, coupled with pristine beauty, earned Pragpur the distinction of being declared India's first Heritage Village by the Himachal Pradesh state government in December 1997.

Within the Heritage Village, notable attractions include the Lala Rerumal Haveli, Butail Mandir, Chaujjar Mansion, courtyards of the Sood Clans, an ancient Shakti Mandir, and atiyalas or public platforms. The village is renowned for its cottage industry, with craftspeople specializing in weaving, basket making, silversmithing, painting, music, and tailoring. Visitors can indulge in purchasing hand-woven blankets, shawls, and hand-block printed clothes.

Pragpur, also known as "full of pollen" in Sanskrit, comes alive with blossoms in spring, creating a captivating ambience. The village is easily accessible by bus, with National Highway 70 passing through Kaloha, connecting Amb to Hamirpur.
