“Promoting Women’s Health & Well-Being”: Health Ministry Formulates Draft Menstrual Hygiene Policy

In a significant stride towards women’s health and hygiene, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has unveiled a comprehensive draft menstrual hygiene policy. This crucial development was communicated to the Rajya Sabha by Union Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani during the parliamentary session on Wednesday.

Addressing the House, Minister Irani emphasized the collaborative efforts involved in formulating the policy, which took into account valuable input from stakeholders. The proposed policy aims to address and advance menstrual hygiene practices across the nation.

Minister Irani shed light on an existing initiative targeted at girls in the 10-19 age bracket. Currently in place, the initiative is being executed by the National Health Mission through the State Programme Implementation Plan route. Its primary goal is to heighten awareness about menstrual hygiene, an integral aspect of women’s health, reported  NDTV.

“The health ministry, in consultation with stakeholders, has meticulously crafted this draft policy, underscoring the government’s commitment to promoting women’s health and well-being,” Minister Irani stated.

Beyond the newly unveiled policy, Minister Irani elucidated on additional endeavors orchestrated by various ministries to uplift menstrual hygiene awareness. One such initiative is embedded in the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao component of Mission Shakti—a comprehensive scheme dedicated to the safety, security, and empowerment of women, spearheaded by the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development.

As part of Mission Shakti, considerable emphasis is placed on raising awareness about menstrual hygiene. Minister Irani highlighted this as a pivotal aspect of the broader mission, ensuring that women across the country are well-informed and empowered in matters concerning their health.

The draft menstrual hygiene policy signals a pivotal moment in the government’s commitment to fostering the well-being of women. As the nation progresses towards embracing more inclusive and comprehensive healthcare policies, this initiative stands as a testament to the importance accorded to menstrual health.

The proposed policy, once implemented, is poised to make a substantial impact on women’s lives, providing them with the resources and knowledge needed to manage their menstrual health effectively. With collaborative efforts from various ministries and stakeholders, the government continues to chart a course towards a healthier and more informed society.
