Chilika Lake Witnesses Modest Increase In Winter Bird Count

Chilika Lake, the largest brackish water lagoon in Asia, has seen a slight uptick in its avian population this winter, according to the findings of the annual water bird status survey released on Thursday. The picturesque lagoon, renowned for its vibrant birdlife, hosted approximately 11.37 lakh winged visitors during the current winter season, a marginal increase from the 11.32 lakh recorded in the previous season.

The survey, a collaborative effort between the Chilika Development Authority (CDA), State Wildlife Organisation, and Bombay Natural History Society (BHNS), unveiled interesting insights into the migratory patterns and species diversity within the region.

This year, the number of migratory bird species congregating at the lagoon experienced a modest growth, rising from 105 in 2023 to 108 in 2024. Notably, Nalabana, a critical area within Chilika, witnessed a significant congregation, hosting a total of 3,42,897 birds—4,383 more than the previous year as reported by The New Indian Express.

The comprehensive headcount exercise documented a total of 11,37,759 birds belonging to 187 different species. This figure comprised 10,98,813 migratory birds spanning 108 species and an additional 38,946 birds representing wetland-dependent species. Comparatively, the previous year witnessed 11,31,929 birds of 184 species, including 10,93,049 migratory birds and 38,880 birds from wetland-dependent species.

While the overall increase is marginal, these findings highlight the ongoing significance of Chilika Lake as a vital habitat for a diverse range of avian species. Conservation efforts and the collaborative work of environmental organizations continue to play a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance of this unique ecosystem.

The annual survey not only underscores the resilience of Chilika's ecosystem but also emphasizes the importance of ongoing conservation initiatives to preserve the rich biodiversity of this natural wonder.
