Rajesh Kumar, a 35-year-old man from Hamirpur, Uttar Pradesh, died by suicide on January 3, 2025, after alleging mental harassment from his wife and mother-in-law in a video recorded shortly before his death. In the video, he demanded their arrest and the return of his children, who are currently in his wife’s custody. His brother, Santosh Kumar, reported ongoing harassment and threats of a false dowry case against Rajesh. Following the incident, police have registered a case against the two women as investigations continue.

Desperate Plea for Justice

In a heart-wrenching video, Rajesh Kumar expressed his despair and called for justice just hours before taking his own life. He stated, “If I have worked honestly, there should be justice in my case,” highlighting the emotional turmoil he experienced. Rajesh’s video plea included demands for the arrest of his wife and mother-in-law while also requesting the return of his two children, who are currently living with their mother.

Tragically, Rajesh consumed poisonous substance shortly after recording the video and succumbed to his injuries during treatment at a local hospital. His final words have resonated with many, sparking discussions about the pressures individuals face within domestic relationships.

Allegations of Harassment

The circumstances leading to Rajesh’s tragic decision reveal a disturbing narrative of alleged domestic strife. His brother, Santosh Kumar, informed authorities that Rajesh had endured continuous mental harassment from both his wife and mother-in-law. According to Santosh, threats of a false dowry case loomed over Rajesh, exacerbating his distress.

The situation escalated on January 2 when Rajesh’s wife took all valuables from their home and left with their children. In an attempt to retrieve his belongings, Rajesh was allegedly met with hostility and threats from his family members. Hamirpur Circle Officer Rajesh Kamal confirmed that a case has been filed against the two women based on Santosh’s complaint, indicating that authorities are taking the matter seriously as they investigate further.

Contextualising Domestic Struggles

This tragic incident is not isolated; it reflects broader societal issues regarding mental health and domestic violence in India. Reports indicate that many individuals face similar struggles but often lack access to adequate support systems. Mental health advocates have long called for increased awareness and resources to address domestic disputes before they escalate into tragedies like this one.

The stigma surrounding mental health issues often prevents individuals from seeking help or discussing their challenges openly. The need for community support systems that prioritise empathy and understanding is more critical than ever.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

This heartbreaking incident underscores the urgent need for societal change regarding mental health awareness and support systems for those facing domestic challenges. It is crucial that we cultivate an environment where individuals can seek help without fear of stigma or retaliation. As we reflect on Rajesh’s plea for justice and the profound impact of mental harassment, we must ask ourselves: what steps can we take to ensure that no one feels isolated in their struggles?
