Urbanization and housing schemes to increase the human population are destroying the mangroves, as mangroves are drained, and land is cleared to make space for urban projects. Environmental degradation is growing due to mangrove destruction. Due to the destruction of mangrove forests, many people are losing their source of livelihood. The Sundarbans provide an effective flood and storm barrier for the millions who live in and around Kolkata and West Bengal.
