Thousands of people from the Koli, Kabbaliga, and Talwar communities in Yadgir district, Karnataka, staged a massive protest on September 1, 2025, demanding strict action against leaders from the Valmiki community who made derogatory remarks against Nija Sharana Ambigara Chowdaiah, a revered 12th-century saint and poet.

The protesters called for the arrest and banishment of these leaders and demanded official recognition of their sub-castes under the Scheduled Tribes list. The protest involved blocking key roadways, including Subhas Circle, causing traffic disruptions. A memorandum was submitted to Deputy Commissioner Harshal Bhoyar, addressed to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, urging immediate government intervention and justice.

Unity and Outrage Among Communities

The protest saw thousands of participants carrying portraits of Ambigara Chowdaiah, chanting slogans to uphold the honor of their saint and communities. The blockade at Subhas Circle disrupted normal life as roads were blocked for hours, highlighting the protesters’ unity and determination.

Leaders emphasised the insult to the saint and the broader insult to the Koli, Kabbaliga, and Talwar communities stemming from the offensive remarks by Valmiki leaders during a protest against fake caste certificates. Protesters demanded strict legal action, including arrest and expulsion of the responsible leaders from their community to preserve social harmony and dignity.

Caste Identity and Recognition Dispute

At the heart of the protest lie ongoing tensions around caste recognition in Karnataka. The Koli, Kabbaliga, Talwar, Kabber, Besta, and Ambiga sub-castes asserted that they should be duly recognized under the Scheduled Tribes list to access social and educational benefits. These groups are often identified by different names across regions, leading to confusion and marginalisation.

The derogatory comments by Valmiki leaders ignited longstanding grievances over caste status and recognition. Deputy Commissioner Harshal Bhoyar confirmed that cases have been registered against the accused and reassured protesters that their demands would be taken seriously, highlighting the government’s role in balancing justice with maintaining community peace.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

This protest underscores the sensitive nature of caste relations in India and the deep respect communities place on their cultural and religious icons. Insulting revered figures like Ambigara Chowdaiah wounds community sentiments and threatens social cohesion.

The Logical Indian advocates for peaceful dialogue, empathy, and concerted efforts to address caste disputes and historic injustices constructively. True social progress depends on fostering mutual respect and equality among diverse groups, avoiding divisive rhetoric or actions.
