Kolkata has once again been declared the safest city in India for the third successive year, as per the latest report released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The eastern metropolis demonstrated an exemplary track record by recording the lowest number of cognizable offences per lakh population among major cities. While Kolkata reported 86.5 cases of such crimes per lakh people in 2022, Pune and Hyderabad trailed with 280.7 and 299.2 cases, respectively, according to the NCRB data.

The NCRB report, titled ‘Crime in India 2022,’ sheds light on the consistent decline in cognizable crimes in Kolkata. In 2021, the city registered 103.4 cases per lakh population, which decreased to 86.5 this year. Notably, the downward trend has been evident since 2020 when the count stood at 129.5 cases per lakh people. This statistical decline reflects Kolkata’s proactive measures and effective law enforcement strategies.

The comparison among 19 cities with populations exceeding 20 lakhs led to Kolkata’s recognition as the safest, underscoring the city’s commitment to maintaining public safety, as per a report in India Today. However, the report also highlighted an increase in crimes against women in Kolkata, with cases rising from 1,783 in 2021 to 1,890 in 2022. The crime rate against women in the city was reported at 27.1 per lakh population, surpassing Coimbatore’s 12.9 and Chennai’s 17.1.

On a positive note, Kolkata witnessed a notable decrease in violent crimes, with murder cases dropping from 45 in 2021 to 34 in 2022. Rape cases remained constant at 11, as reported in both 2021 and 2022.

The NCRB report ‘Crime in India 2022’ draws its data from 36 states and Union territories, along with central agencies, providing a comprehensive overview of the country’s crime scenario.

Kolkata’s consecutive triumph as the safest city in India for the third year running underscores the city’s resolute commitment to maintaining law and order. The decline in cognizable crimes and violent incidents speaks to the efficacy of Kolkata’s law enforcement mechanisms. While the increase in crimes against women is a concern, the overall safety record solidifies Kolkata’s standing as a model city in terms of public security. The NCRB report serves as a valuable resource, offering insights into the crime landscape across the nation.
