Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a historic visit to Guyana on November 20, 2024, becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to do so in 56 years. He was welcomed by President Mohamed Irfaan Ali and cabinet ministers, marking a significant step in strengthening bilateral relations. Ten agreements were signed, focusing on cooperation in energy, healthcare, and agriculture, underscoring Guyana’s role in India’s energy security.

A Historic Welcome 

Modi’s arrival was marked by a ceremonial welcome, including a Guard of Honour and the presentation of the ‘Key to the City of Georgetown.’ During his visit, he expressed gratitude for the warm reception and highlighted the importance of deepening India-Guyana ties. President Ali praised Modi as a “champion among leaders,” reflecting the mutual respect between the nations.

Building Stronger Ties 

This visit follows President Ali’s participation in the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in January 2023, showcasing ongoing engagement. Modi and Ali discussed enhancing collaboration in hydrocarbons, pharmaceuticals, and digital payment systems.

The Prime Minister also announced a $5 million grant for community development projects in Guyana, emphasizing India’s commitment to contributing to Guyana’s military capacity and expanding agricultural cooperation.
