Authorities have shut down the NCC camp at KMM College in Thrikkakara, Kochi, after nearly 80 students allegedly suffered food poisoning, leading to hospitalisation. The incident occurred on December 23, 2024, when cadets began experiencing severe symptoms, prompting protests from concerned parents demanding answers. Health officials are investigating the suspected cause of the outbreak, while local MLA Uma Thomas has visited the site to assess the situation and support affected families.

Health Crisis at NCC Camp

The NCC camp, which was hosting approximately 518 participants, faced a serious health crisis on Monday when around 75 cadets were reportedly rushed to hospitals after showing symptoms of food poisoning, including abdominal pain and fatigue. By late evening, many students had collapsed, requiring immediate medical attention at local hospitals. Frustrated parents gathered outside the college, demanding updates on their children’s health and ultimately leading to the camp’s closure. “We just want to know how this happened and ensure our children are safe,” expressed one concerned parent during the protests.

Background and Response

This incident raises significant concerns about food safety practices in educational institutions. Following the alarming reports of illness, health officials from Thrikkakara Municipality have initiated an investigation into the camp’s food sources and preparation methods. Local MLA Uma Thomas has been actively involved in addressing the situation, visiting the site to speak with students and parents about their concerns. Officials have assured that the health of those affected is stable as they continue to gather information regarding the incident.
