This winter season typically brings significant snowfall that can disrupt daily life and transportation. In previous years, similar weather conditions have led to road closures and power outages, impacting both residents and tourists. The region’s mountainous terrain makes it particularly vulnerable to such weather events, which can cause landslides and avalanches. This year, the early onset of heavy snowfall has caught many off guard, leading to widespread disruptions and prompting emergency responses from local authorities and the Indian Army.

Indian Army Evacuates Civilians 

In response to the heavy snowfall affecting Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian Army has successfully evacuated 68 tourists stranded in Gulmarg, a well-known skiing destination. The Chinar Corps acted swiftly after receiving a distress call from civil authorities as access roads were blocked by significant snow accumulation. The evacuated group included families with children, and the Army provided them with hot meals and medical assistance. This operation underscores the vital role of the Army in ensuring civilian safety during such emergencies.

Train Services Suspended 

The severe weather has also led to the suspension of train services across the region. Officials reported that operations were halted due to slippery tracks and poor visibility caused by heavy snow. The Jammu and Kashmir Railway Department is actively monitoring conditions and has advised passengers to stay informed about service updates. Efforts are being made to clear tracks and restore normal operations as soon as it is deemed safe.

Flights Cancelled 

Flight operations at Srinagar Airport have been significantly impacted by the adverse weather conditions. All flights were cancelled due to heavy snowfall that began late on Friday night and continued into Saturday morning. An official from the Airport Authority of India indicated that attempts to clear the runway were disrupted by fresh snowfall. Passengers are encouraged to check with airlines for rescheduling options as conditions remain unpredictable.

Exams Postponed 

In light of the ongoing weather disruptions, educational authorities have announced the cancellation of exams scheduled for today across various institutions in Kashmir. Students and parents are concerned about rescheduling amid uncertainty regarding weather conditions. The Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education is expected to provide updates on new exam dates soon while prioritising student safety during this challenging period.

Government Response 

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has been actively monitoring the situation. He confirmed that around 2,000 vehicles were stranded in Qazigund due to heavy snowfall and stated, “The DC is on-site with his team, prioritising vehicles carrying families and children.” Abdullah emphasized that emergency measures are in place to assist those stranded, including ambulances and overnight shelter arrangements for those in need. Additionally, he reported widespread power outages resulting from the snowfall, noting that 41 feeders at the 33 KV level and 739 feeders at the 11 KV level were non-functional. He assured residents that restoration work is underway and that more than 90% of affected feeders would be operational by evening.

Tourist Influx in Himachal Pradesh 

While Kashmir faces significant challenges from heavy snowfall, neighbouring Himachal Pradesh is experiencing a notable increase in tourist arrivals due to recent snowfalls in popular destinations like Shimla and Manali. This influx has resulted in substantial traffic congestion on local roads. However, the adverse weather has also led to tragic incidents; four individuals have lost their lives in separate accidents caused by vehicles skidding on icy roads. Authorities report that 174 roads are currently closed due to snow accumulation, with ongoing efforts focused on clearing these routes.

Positive Agricultural Impact 

The snowfall in Himachal Pradesh is being viewed positively for agriculture, particularly for apple orchards that require moisture after a prolonged dry spell. Onkar Chand Sharma, Additional Chief Secretary for Revenue and Disaster Management, noted that while road access poses challenges, the snow will ultimately benefit farmers. He also mentioned that snow clearance operations are prioritising key routes serving both local residents and tourists.
