The Karate Girls Crowdfunding Campaign 2014

The Logical Indian Community raised 6 lakhs through crowd-funding to send Bhavisha and team – The Karate Girls to the 22nd World Senior Karate Championship tournament in Germany.

The Challenge

Having won a combined total of 422 Gold medals, 61 Silver and 30 bronze in local, national and international tournaments, Bhavisha Singh, Sharmila Gharu and Divya Kathawate (or as we like to call them – The Karate Girls), were still unable to find sponsors to aid their participation in the 22nd World Senior Karate Championship tournament in Germany. They approached The Logical Indian to help them find a sponsor(s), so they could array the 75,000 rupees they needed for registration immediately, and the rest later on.

The Effort

The Logical Indian appealed to community members to come together and sponsor the Karate Girls’ participation at the championship in Germany. TLI shot a video where the Karate Girls got to address the community directly, stating that they needed 6 lakh rupees to ensure full participation. It took all of a mere three weeks and many motivated hearts, to reach the goal amount. The crowdfunding campaign was set up on Ketto, and details of the event and the players was shared on their website.

The Karate girls left to Germany in October 2014, to represent India. Despite being knocked out in the initial rounds, they came back more determined than ever before, as they had seen what our country is capable of doing when we unite.

The ‘Here and Now’

The Karate Girls have made India proud in championships held in China, Malaysia, Japan, Taiwan, Chinese Taipei, Sri Lanka, Uzbekistan and Paris. The crowdfunding campaign set an example and the girls had sponsors from the very beginning for their upcoming events. They went on to represent India at 13th Senior Asian Karate Championship held at Yokohoma, Japan.
