A three-year-old girl, Divya Behra, was killed after being mauled by a pack of stray dogs in Katnapalli village of Telangana’s Peddapalli district on April 20. The child, daughter of migrant labourers from Odisha working at a local brick kiln, was playing outside her home when the dogs attacked and dragged her into nearby fields. She succumbed to severe injuries before help could arrive.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation, while local authorities have promised measures to curb the stray dog menace. The incident has sparked outrage among residents and renewed concerns over public safety and the living conditions of migrant worker families.
Stray Dog Attack Leaves Community In Shock
According to reports, the attack took place near the workers’ settlement at a brick kiln in Sultanabad mandal, where Divya’s family had been living for nearly a year. The child was briefly unattended when a pack of stray dogs pounced on her and chased her into nearby agricultural fields.
By the time her parents realised she was missing and began searching, she had already suffered fatal injuries. She was rushed to a local hospital but was declared dead on arrival. Police officials confirmed that a case has been registered based on the father’s complaint and an investigation is underway. Authorities have also indicated that teams may be deployed to control the stray dog population and prevent similar incidents.
Rising Incidents Highlight Public Safety Gaps
The tragedy is part of a worrying pattern of stray dog attacks reported across the state in recent months. Just days earlier, a young boy in a nearby district died from injuries sustained in a similar attack, while multiple cases involving children have been recorded over the past year.
Experts and civic observers have linked the rise in such incidents to gaps in sterilisation drives, poor waste management that attracts stray animals and limited coordination between local bodies. Vulnerable groups, especially migrant workers living in informal settlements near industrial sites, face heightened risks due to lack of secure housing, childcare support and safe play areas for children.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
This deeply distressing incident underscores the urgent need for a humane, coordinated and sustained response to the stray dog issue one that balances animal welfare with human safety. Reactive measures alone cannot prevent such tragedies; long-term strategies such as effective sterilisation programmes, better waste management and safer housing conditions for migrant families are essential. Equally important is ensuring that marginalised communities are not left to navigate unsafe environments without institutional support. How can authorities, urban planners and communities work together to create safer, more inclusive spaces where no child’s life is put at risk?
