A triple murder case in Telangana’s Hanamkonda district has exposed the brutal consequences of gender bias, where a man allegedly killed his pregnant wife and two young daughters by drowning them in a swimming pool after luring them there under false pretences.

The incident, which took place earlier this week near Punnole village, was initially reported as an accidental drowning. However, police investigations soon uncovered evidence of a premeditated crime, including tampered CCTV footage and contradictions in the accused’s statements.

Officials suspect the motive was his alleged obsession with having a male child, as his wife had reportedly refused to abort a pregnancy he believed would result in another girl. A murder case has been registered and the accused is being interrogated as the investigation progresses.

Planned Killing Disguised As Accident

According to investigators, the accused allegedly took his wife and daughters to a family-owned swimming pool under the pretext of an outing and switched off CCTV cameras before pushing them into the water. He later rushed them to a hospital, claiming accidental drowning, but medical staff and police grew suspicious due to inconsistencies in his account.

“The sequence of events described did not match the evidence at the scene,” a senior police official said, noting that forensic findings indicated homicide rather than an accident. Authorities further revealed that the accused’s statements changed during questioning, strengthening the case against him. The victims a 26-year-old woman and her two daughters were declared dead on arrival, leaving the local community in deep shock.

History Of Coercion And Gender Bias

Preliminary findings point to a disturbing pattern of coercion and gender discrimination within the household. Police sources and statements from relatives suggest that the accused had previously pressured his wife to terminate pregnancies upon suspecting female foetuses. Tensions reportedly escalated when she refused to undergo another abortion during her current pregnancy.

Investigators believe this refusal may have triggered the alleged crime. Authorities are now recording statements from family members and examining past behaviour to determine whether earlier warning signs of abuse were missed. The case has been registered under relevant sections of murder and other applicable laws, including those addressing domestic violence and illegal sex selection practices.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

This heartbreaking incident is a stark reminder that gender bias is not just a social issue it can escalate into extreme violence when left unchecked. The alleged motive underscores how deeply entrenched son preference continues to endanger the lives and dignity of women and girls.

While legal action is necessary, meaningful change requires sustained efforts in education, awareness and challenging regressive mindsets within families and communities. As we reflect on this tragedy, a crucial question arises: How can society intervene earlier to prevent gender bias from turning into such irreversible acts of violence?
