Jamui Police have registered an FIR and launched an investigation after two videos surfaced on social media allegedly showing a Class 10 girl and a Class 10 boy being stopped and harassed by a group of youths in Bihar’s Jamui.
The two minors, residents of Jamui town, had reportedly gone to Marwa Pahad on a scooter after attending coaching classes and were allegedly confronted while returning. The footage appears to show the group surrounding the students, questioning them and allegedly subjecting the girl to inappropriate physical contact, while the boy is also seen being held back.
Police took cognisance of the videos after no immediate complaint was made by the families, traced the minors and recorded their statements. Jamui Superintendent of Police Vishwajit Dayal said a case had been registered at Nagar police station and that the police were identifying those involved through the videos and other evidence. Subsequent reports said seven people were booked and three arrested, with the investigation continuing to establish the role of other suspects. An SIT has been formed to investigate the matter further.
Viral Videos Trigger Probe
The incident reportedly took place on the evening of September 19 in the Jamui Sadar police station area. According to preliminary information, the two Class 10 students had attended coaching classes before travelling to Marwa Pahad on a scooter. While returning, they were allegedly stopped on the road by a group of youths. The videos that later circulated online show several people surrounding the minors and questioning them about their identities and whereabouts.
In one clip, the girl appears to plead with the group to let them leave, while the boy is separated from her and appears to be held by his clothing.
The footage also allegedly shows some members of the group engaging in inappropriate physical contact with the girl and attempting to prevent the students from leaving.
The videos themselves capture only portions of the reported incident. One is around a minute long and another around 35 seconds, while police and media reports have indicated that the confrontation may have continued for longer. The footage has not, by itself, established every detail of what happened before, during or after the confrontation. Police are therefore examining the videos alongside statements and other evidence. The identities of the two minor victims have been established, but their names and other identifying details should remain protected given their age.
Police Trace Those Involved
Police action began after the videos came to their attention on social media. Reports said the victims and their families had not initially approached the police following the alleged incident. After taking cognisance of the footage, investigators traced the two students and began gathering information about the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.
Jamui SP Vishwajit Dayal said, “A case had been registered at Nagar police station in connection with the viral videos and the alleged harassment of the minor boy and girl.” He added that no accused had initially been named in the FIR and that investigators were identifying those involved on the basis of the videos and other evidence.
The investigation subsequently moved towards identifying and apprehending the people allegedly involved. The Indian Express reported that an FIR was registered under relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and that three people had been arrested while special teams were searching for other suspects. Another report said seven people had been booked. Police have also recorded the minors’ statements confidentially and are examining the individual roles of those seen in the footage. These details remain subject to the ongoing investigation, and the allegations against any accused will have to be established through due process.

The alleged harassment of two school students in a public place raises serious concerns about the safety, dignity and privacy of minors. Regardless of the circumstances that led to the confrontation, no group has the right to intimidate, physically harass or publicly shame young people. At the same time, an investigation must establish the facts carefully rather than allowing viral footage, speculation or online outrage to substitute for due process. The privacy of the two minors is particularly important, and sharing identifiable footage can cause further harm to those already involved.
Police, families, educational institutions and communities all have a role in creating spaces where young people can seek help without fear and where allegations are addressed through lawful and compassionate processes. How can communities make public spaces safer for children while ensuring that accountability and empathy remain at the centre of such cases?
