The mother of the 15-year-old girl who faced widespread backlash after making abusive remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a protest over the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak has said she will continue to stand by her daughter, even as the family copes with online abuse and public scrutiny. While acknowledging that her daughter’s choice of words was wrong, she questioned why a teenager was subjected to threats and harassment over the incident.
The mother said she hopes her daughter learns from the episode but does not become fearful of raising her voice on issues affecting students. The development comes days after the teenager issued a public apology, with the complainant subsequently withdrawing the case.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also appealed for forgiveness, saying punitive action against a student would not address the larger concerns raised by the protest. Delhi Police have said they have not received any formal complaint regarding the alleged threats faced by the family.
‘She Made a Mistake, But She Should Not Be Silenced’
Speaking publicly for the first time since the controversy erupted, the teenager’s mother said her daughter had already accepted responsibility for the language she used during the protest and deeply regretted the remarks. However, she said the family’s ordeal did not end with the apology, alleging that they have continued to receive abusive messages, threats and intense criticism online.
The mother, who earns a living by giving private tuition, said she had explained to her daughter that disagreement should always be expressed respectfully, particularly when directed at constitutional authorities or public representatives. At the same time, she questioned whether a child deserved to face sustained harassment over a moment of poor judgement.
“She was wrong, and she knows that,” she said, adding that she wants her daughter to emerge from the experience wiser rather than frightened. According to her, the incident should serve as a lesson in responsible expression, not as a reason for young people to withdraw from public life or stop participating in peaceful democratic protests concerning issues that directly affect them.
The mother also reiterated that students have a legitimate right to raise concerns about the integrity of public examinations and said she hoped the focus would return to the larger issues surrounding NEET rather than remaining centred on a teenager’s mistake. Delhi Police have stated that they have not received any official complaint regarding the alleged threats or harassment against the family.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently urged restraint, saying that punishing a young student would not solve the underlying problem and that forgiveness would be a more meaningful response. Following these developments, the complainant withdrew the case that had been filed against the teenager.
