Hundreds of ad-hoc teachers or the Shiksha Mitras including women in Uttar Pradesh tonsured their heads on July 25. Apart from this, many of the Brahmin teachers gave up their Janaeu (sacred thread). These teachers have been protesting since last 71 days now. The protesting teachers are demanding regularisation of their services and asking for the issuance of appointment letters to those who have cleared the teacher eligibility test (TET).

Frequent changes in the recruitment procedure
On November 30, 2011, an advertisement for filling up 72,825 posts was released by the Uttar Pradesh government. Candidates for these posts were to be recruited by TET scores. Some candidates challenged this decision in Allahabad High Court. They demanded recruitment be done on academic merit.
Meanwhile, in 2012, Samajwadi Party (SP) came to power and put out a new advertisement based on academic merit. The government then released the advertisement on December 7, 2012, cancelling the previous one based on TET scores. However, in 2014, Allahabad court recognised that the recruitment on the TET score was the right way.
In 2017, the Supreme Court too quashed their appointment. SC also said that the contractual position would be converted into government jobs only if they clear TET. After the SC’s judgement, the salaries of these teachers came down from Rs 38,848 to Rs 3,500. The Yogi government however slightly increased the salary of contractual teachers from Rs 3,500 to Rs 10,000.
1.73 lakh teachers affected
The agitating teachers have also put forth demands for compensation to be paid to families of those teachers who died during the protest. 104 Shiksha Mitras had allegedly died during protests and agitation which UP government refuted in Assembly(Feb 9 2018).
Regarding teachers tonsuring their heads in protest Uma, president of Siksha Mitra Association of Uttar Pradesh said, “In a state that is lead by a ‘Mahatma’ (a reference to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath who is the head priest of temple in Gorakhpur), it is matter of shame that women were forced to tonsure their heads to raise their demands”, as reported by India Today.
The Logical Indian hopes that the government takes note of the matter and provide relief to the agitating teachers.
