A workplace harassment scandal at the Nashik branch of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has escalated into a major legal crisis involving allegations of forced religious conversion and systematic exploitation.

Since February 2022, several female employees were allegedly subjected to sexual harassment, religious coercion, and mental torture by a group of colleagues. The investigation, led by a Special Investigation Team (SIT), has resulted in nine FIRs and seven arrests, including a senior HR manager.

The case has now reached the Supreme Court, where a plea has been filed to classify such organized, deceitful conversions as an “indirect war” on India’s sovereignty. While the accused claim the charges are exaggerated, TCS has suspended the implicated staff and initiated a high-level internal probe led by its Chief Operating Officer.

Pattern Of Abuse: Beyond Workplace Boundaries

The investigation has uncovered a chilling, four-year pattern of abuse targeting young women aged 18–25. According to the SIT, led by ACP Sandeep Mitke, victims were subjected to persistent stalking, inappropriate touching, and sexually explicit remarks.

One victim alleged that a colleague established a physical relationship under the false promise of marriage while hiding his existing marital status. Beyond sexual misconduct, the FIRs detail “religious targeting,” where employees were allegedly pressured to offer namaz, wear Islamic attire, and consume non-vegetarian food against their beliefs. Victims described being isolated on rooftops and having their phones confiscated to prevent them from reporting the abuse. “TCS has a long-standing zero-tolerance policy… we took swift action as soon as we were made aware,” a company spokesperson stated, though critics point out that internal POSH (Prevention of Sexual Harassment) mechanisms failed to act for years.

Legal Escalation: From Local FIRs To The Supreme Court

The case took a national turn when Advocate Ashwini Upadhyay moved the Supreme Court, arguing that the “organized religious conversion in Nashik has shaken the conscience of the country.”

The plea seeks to declare coercive conversion a “terrorist act” and a threat to national integration, calling for stricter laws and special courts. Locally, the Nashik police have arrested seven individuals, including team leaders and HR manager Nida Khan—who is accused of enabling the perpetrators and suppressing victim complaints. While some accused have sought bail—including claims of pregnancy from the defense—prosecutors argue that the scale of the financial links and the “brainwashing” tactics used suggest a wider, organized network. Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis has termed the incident “extremely serious,” prompting a comprehensive audit of POSH compliance across the firm’s units.
