Artificial intelligence is increasingly finding its biggest commercial opportunities away from chatbots and consumer applications.
Tata Consultancy Services’ latest agreement with industrial technology company ABB illustrates how global enterprises are investing in AI to modernise the digital infrastructure that keeps their operations running.
While the deal’s financial value remains undisclosed, it highlights a growing focus on AI-enabled network management, cybersecurity and operational resilience rather than standalone AI tools.
On July 13, TCS announced that it had secured a multi-million, multi-year contract from ABB to manage the company’s global network operations through an AI-driven Network-as-a-Service model.
According to Reuters and the company, the engagement will support ABB’s Future Network Model programme by modernising its worldwide networking environment with AI-led automation and intelligent operations.
Modernising Global Networks
Under the agreement, TCS will design, deploy and manage ABB’s global network infrastructure across its international operations. The programme includes AI-powered network monitoring, automated operations, enhanced cybersecurity, compliance management and improved service delivery.
According to TCS, the objective is to create a more resilient digital network that improves user experience while supporting ABB’s broader adoption of artificial intelligence across its business. The company said the transformation is intended to strengthen cyber resilience and simplify the management of complex global networks.
The latest agreement also extends a relationship spanning more than two decades. Earlier in 2026, the two companies signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on industrial AI, engineering services, data centres and enterprise applications, indicating that the network transformation is part of a wider technology partnership.
Strong Enterprise Pipeline
The ABB announcement comes shortly after TCS reported a robust start to FY27, suggesting continued demand for large-scale enterprise technology projects.
For the quarter ended June 2026, TCS reported a Total Contract Value (TCV) of US$9.5 billion, reflecting the total value of contracts signed during the quarter. Revenue increased 13.9% year-on-year to ₹72,275 crore, while net profit rose 4.6% to ₹13,349 crore.
The company also reported an annualised AI revenue run rate of US$2.6 billion, indicating that AI-led transformation projects are becoming an increasingly meaningful part of its business.
During its earnings announcement, TCS said clients continue to prioritise investments in AI, cloud modernisation, cybersecurity and digital infrastructure despite macroeconomic uncertainty. The ABB engagement aligns with that strategy by combining AI with long-term infrastructure management rather than focusing solely on AI software deployments.
AI Expands Into Industry
The ABB project reflects how industrial companies are increasingly incorporating AI into core operational systems.
