At just 15, Odisha-born Indian shuttler Tanvi Patri has made a breakthrough on the senior international stage by winning her maiden senior international title at the Polytron Pontianak International Challenge in Indonesia on August 30, 2026. Born on April 14, 2011, in Balasore, Odisha, Patri defeated Canada’s top seed Rachel Chan in the semi-final before beating South Korea’s Kim Min Sun in the final.
A Dominant Final
Patri defeated Kim Min Sun 21-5, 21-6 in the final, completing the match in just 32 minutes. She conceded only 11 points across the two games and maintained control throughout the contest.
The victory came after Patri had already produced a strong run in Pontianak, including her semi-final win over Chan, who was ranked No. 51 at the time. The title gave Patri her first senior international trophy and added another milestone to her rapidly developing career.
Building From Setbacks
The Indonesian triumph came just a week after Patri reached the final of the Antica Singapore International Challenge. She eventually finished runner-up after losing to Japan’s Manami Suizu in the title clash.
Rather than ending her run of strong performances, the Singapore result was followed by an even bigger breakthrough in Indonesia, where Patri claimed her maiden senior title.
Her junior career had already established her as a promising young player. In 2024, the Balasore-born shuttler won the girls’ singles title at the Badminton Asia U-15 Junior Championships. Earlier in 2026, she also won the U-19 All India Junior Ranking tournament in Bengaluru.
She was subsequently selected for India’s squad for the 2026 Badminton Asia Junior Championships, giving her another opportunity to compete against leading young players from across the continent.
From Balasore to China
Patri’s journey began in Odisha before her family’s time in China became an important part of her badminton development. She spent several early developmental years training in China while her family lived there.
After returning to India, Patri continued her training in Bengaluru at the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy, now known as the Centre of Badminton Excellence.
