Odisha’s Tanvi Patri has won the girls’ singles U17 title at the Badminton Asia U17 & U15 Junior Championships in Chengdu, China, defeating fellow Indian and academy-mate Shaina Manimuthu 11-15, 15-10, 15-12 in an all-Indian final on September 13.
The second-seeded Patri recovered after losing the opening game to claim the continental crown. Her victory marks another major milestone in a breakthrough 2026 season, coming weeks after she won her maiden senior international title in Indonesia. Manimuthu, the sixth seed, finished with the silver medal.
A Comeback Victory
The final began in Manimuthu’s favour as she took the opening game 15-11. Patri, however, responded with greater control in the second game, winning 15-10 and forcing a decider. The Odisha shuttler maintained her composure in the final game to edge Manimuthu 15-12 and complete the comeback.
The result also ensured India retained the Asian U17 girls’ singles title for a second consecutive year, following Diksha Sudhakar’s victory in 2025. The all-Indian final further underlined the depth of India’s emerging talent in women’s badminton.

From Odisha To Asia
Patri’s latest success builds on a promising junior career. The Odisha shuttler had already made her mark at the continental level by winning the Asian U15 girls’ singles title in 2024. Her development has seen her progress through junior competitions while increasingly testing herself against senior opposition.
In 2026, she reached the final of the Antica Singapore International Challenge before going one step further at the Polytron Pontianak International Challenge in Indonesia. Her performances have established her as one of India’s promising young badminton players.
A Breakthrough Season
The Asian U17 title caps a strong run for Patri in 2026. On August 30, she claimed her maiden senior international title at the Polytron Pontianak International Challenge in Indonesia, defeating South Korea’s Kim Min Sun 21-5, 21-6 in the final. She had also reached the final of the Antica Singapore International Challenge earlier in the year.
Patri previously won the Asian U15 girls’ singles title in 2024, and her latest victory highlights her progress across junior and senior competition. Her coach Sagar Chopda has stressed the importance of keeping her injury-free and helping her build strength as she takes on a demanding competitive schedule.
