The Puducherry government, under Chief Minister N Rangasamy, has issued a directive requiring all shops and establishments to display their names in Tamil. Announced on March 18, 2025, during an Assembly session, this decision responds to a plea from Independent legislator G Nehru.

The government will also ensure that all official invitations for departmental functions include Tamil translations. This move aligns with ongoing language preservation efforts in South India, where similar mandates have been implemented in states like Karnataka.

Promoting Tamil Identity Through Policy

Chief Minister Rangasamy stated that the directive is “out of love and respect for the Tamil language,” promising strict enforcement through upcoming circulars. He assured that shop owners would be required to comply with the new signage regulations.

Legislator Nehru emphasised the need for strict adherence to honour the Tamil language’s cultural significance. Additionally, the CM announced that all invitations for government events will now include Tamil versions, reinforcing the language’s importance in public life.

A Regional Push for Linguistic Preservation

Puducherry’s decision comes in the wake of similar actions taken by neighbouring states. The Karnataka government mandated that at least 60% of commercial signboards must be in Kannada, a rule that has faced legal challenges from businesses.

In Tamil Nadu, the ruling DMK has opposed the three-language formula under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, arguing that it prioritises Hindi over regional languages. Chief Minister MK Stalin has firmly rejected any imposition of Hindi learning, advocating for Tamil as the primary language in education and governance.

Public Response and Reactions

The announcement has sparked varied reactions among residents and business owners in Puducherry. While many Tamil speakers have welcomed the initiative as a long-overdue recognition of their linguistic heritage, some business owners express concern over potential financial implications and compliance challenges.

Social media platforms are abuzz with discussions on the impact of such policies on local commerce and cultural identity, highlighting a growing interest in language rights across India.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

The Logical Indian applauds Puducherry’s initiative as a vital step towards preserving linguistic heritage and fostering cultural identity. While celebrating regional pride is essential, it is equally important to encourage dialogue among diverse linguistic communities to promote unity.
