Tamil Nadu police have arrested two men, including the personal assistant of DMK MLA D Mathiazhagan, in connection with the sexual assault of a 20-year-old disabled man near the Krishnagiri toll gate about ten days ago.

The accused are A Adhiyamaan, 39, the MLA’s aide, and Asal Ali, a fancy store owner with reported DMK links. According to police, the assault occurred when both men were sober and took the victim to a secluded spot where the crime happened.

Following a complaint and additional petitions by the victim, the police confirmed that the accused have been remanded in custody until September 22, and investigations including forensic and CCTV examination are in progress.

Political Fallout and Allegations of Pressure

The case quickly took on a political dimension as opposition party AIADMK accused local DMK functionaries and police officials of attempting to pressure the victim into withdrawing his complaint. AIADMK leaders, including Krishnagiri MLA K Ashok Kumar, alleged that DMK town in-charge Aslam Rehman Sheriff and Town Inspector Venkatesh Prabhu organised a ‘khap panchayat’-style meeting that intimidated the victim and his family.

The victim reportedly faced harassment and was offered money to drop the case. These claims were denied by police, who insist the FIR was registered promptly on August 30 and that no political interference will be tolerated. Rights groups and political commentators say such allegations raise serious concerns about justice being overshadowed by power politics.

The Victim’s Experience and Ongoing Struggle

The survivor, a young man preparing for the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission exams, revealed enduring severe mental agony following the assault. He disclosed threats received after the crime, including demands for his phone number and attempts to silence him.

He even contemplated suicide due to the trauma and fear. His persistence in filing complaints against mounting pressure led to the eventual arrests. AIADMK cadres staged protests outside the Krishnagiri police station demanding action against those allegedly involved in intimidation, including calls for suspension of police officials implicated in the pressure tactics. Police assure that the investigation remains active and impartial.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

This deeply disturbing incident highlights the intersection of vulnerability and political influence which puts disabled individuals at heightened risk of exploitation and injustice. The Logical Indian calls for stringent measures to ensure that victims, especially from marginalised communities, receive full protection and fair treatment without fear or favour.

Political affiliations cannot obstruct the pursuit of truth and justice. Our society must foster empathy and uphold the dignity of every person, free from the misuse of power.
