Actor-turned-politician Vijay, the chief of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has been booked under five sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Representation of the People Act for allegedly violating Election Commission (EC) norms. The charges stem from a campaign event in Chennai where authorities claim the party exceeded permitted crowd limits and disrupted public order.

While the police cite safety concerns following a tragic 2025 stampede, Vijay has hit back, accusing the ruling DMK government of “fascist” tactics and using state machinery to stifle his debut assembly election bid. The TVK leader has since approached the Chief Electoral Officer seeking the transfer of top officials to ensure a “level playing field” for the upcoming Tamil Nadu polls

A Clash Over Campaign Grounds

The legal action follows a standoff in the Perambur Assembly constituency, where TVK had sought permission for a large-scale rally. According to police officials, the application was rejected as the chosen venue a congested stretch at Mullai Nagar junction was deemed unsuitable for the 3,000 people expected to attend. “The location is a narrow junction; allowing a massive gathering there would pose a significant risk to public safety and traffic flow,” stated a senior police representative.

Despite the denial, TVK supporters allegedly gathered, leading to the registration of cases against the party leadership. In response, Vijay slammed the Greater Chennai Corporation for suddenly digging pits and placing barricades at the site, questioning, “Shouldn’t the caretaker government be ashamed of deliberately crushing the democratic rights of a new political party?”

Shadows of the Past and Political Friction

The friction between TVK and the state administration is intensified by the memory of the September 2025 stampede in Karur, where a previous TVK rally resulted in nearly 40 fatalities. That incident led to a judicial inquiry and heightened scrutiny of crowd management for the 2026 polls.

However, Vijay alleges that the current restrictions are less about safety and more about political sabotage. On March 29, the TVK chief met with Chief Electoral Officer Archana Patnaik to submit a formal representation.

He has demanded the transfer of the Director General of Police (DGP) and the Chennai Police Commissioner, alleging they are acting under political pressure to favour the ruling party by selectively enforcing the Model Code of Conduct.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

At The Logical Indian, we believe that a healthy democracy thrives on a level playing field where every voice, whether established or emerging, has the right to be heard without fear of administrative overreach. While the safety of citizens is paramount especially given the tragic lessons of the past it is equally vital that the “rules of the game” are applied with absolute transparency and neutrality.

When a new political entity feels systematically silenced, it erodes public trust in the electoral process. We urge both the state administration and political leaders to prioritise dialogue over confrontation and safety over optics. True harmony in our society is built when the law is used to protect the people’s rights, not as a tool for political one-upmanship.
