Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and actor-turned-politician C Joseph Vijay’s wife, Sangeetha Sornalingam, has withdrawn the divorce petition she filed before the Chengalpattu Family Court, bringing the current proceedings to an end.
Sangeetha appeared before the court through video conference on Friday, August 7, and informed Judge D. Sujatha that she did not wish to pursue the case further. Her counsel formally moved the withdrawal petition, and Vijay’s counsel, who was present on his behalf, did not oppose it.
The court subsequently permitted the withdrawal and disposed of the case, while giving Sangeetha liberty to file a fresh petition in the future, if required. The case status was recorded as “Uncontested – Withdrawn”. The development is significant because the petition, which became public earlier this year, had contained allegations of infidelity, mental cruelty, emotional neglect and constructive desertion against Vijay.
However, those allegations were never tested or adjudicated by the court because the petition was withdrawn. There has also been no public statement from either Vijay or Sangeetha explaining why she decided to withdraw the case, and the court’s order does not establish that the couple have reconciled or reached an out-of-court settlement.
Vijay had previously addressed the wider controversy in March at a TVK Women’s Day event, without directly discussing the case, telling supporters not to be hurt by the “recent problems” surrounding him and saying, “I will take care of all that.”
Court Ends Current Proceedings
The withdrawal came after months of proceedings and intense public scrutiny surrounding the personal life of one of Tamil Nadu’s most prominent public figures. During the August 7 hearing, Sangeetha appeared virtually and confirmed that she did not want to continue with the divorce petition.
Reports by media, citing the proceedings, said the hearing lasted roughly 15 minutes, with the judge questioning Sangeetha before allowing her to withdraw the matter. Vijay did not personally appear, with his legal representation appearing before the court. His counsel did not object when Sangeetha sought withdrawal.
The court then allowed the petition to be withdrawn and specifically preserved her right to approach the court again with a fresh petition, if circumstances warranted it. This distinction is legally important. The Chengalpattu court has not granted a divorce to the couple, nor has it ruled on whether the allegations in Sangeetha’s original petition were true or false.
The case has simply ended because the petitioner chose not to pursue that particular proceeding. The withdrawal therefore cannot, by itself, be treated as proof of reconciliation, a mutual-consent divorce, an out-of-court financial settlement or any other private arrangement.
Online discussions following the development have speculated about several possible explanations, including reconciliation and a possible future mutual-consent petition. However, these remain unverified claims. Social-media discussions are not a substitute for a court order or a statement from the parties.
The most reliable information available at present is that Sangeetha withdrew the petition, Vijay’s side did not oppose the withdrawal, and the court disposed of the matter while leaving the option of fresh proceedings open.
From Divorce Filing To Withdrawal
The divorce proceedings first drew widespread attention in February 2026, although reports based on the petition said it had originally been filed in December 2025. Sangeetha sought dissolution of her marriage to Vijay under the Special Marriage Act.
The petition reportedly alleged that she had suffered emotional distress and mental cruelty after discovering in April 2021 that Vijay was allegedly involved in an extramarital relationship with a female co-star. The actress was not named in the petition.
Sangeetha further alleged that Vijay had initially assured her that the relationship would end, but claimed that the association continued. The petition also referred to emotional distance, neglect, alleged public humiliation and what she described as “constructive desertion”.
It sought relief relating to maintenance, permanent alimony and residence, while also asking that proceedings concerning the matrimonial dispute be conducted privately. These claims were allegations contained in a matrimonial petition and were never judicially established, since the case did not proceed to a final hearing on merits. The proceedings subsequently faced adjournments.
In June, the Chengalpattu court scheduled the next hearing for August 7. At that stage, the case remained pending and there had been no final determination. The dispute also unfolded against the backdrop of Vijay’s transformation from a major Tamil film star into a political leader and, following the 2026 Assembly election, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister.
That political transition made his private life a matter of unusually intense public discussion. Vijay himself addressed the controversy at a TVK event in March, telling supporters who were upset by allegations surrounding him: “I see all of you busy fighting those allegations and getting hurt. In fact, I get hurt seeing that you get hurt. I will take care of all that.”
He did not directly discuss the divorce petition or respond publicly to its specific allegations. The case also generated extensive discussion on social media and YouTube, where speculation about Vijay’s alleged relationship with actor Trisha Krishnan became intertwined with reporting about the divorce.
However, neither the identity of the unnamed actress in the petition nor the online claims surrounding Vijay’s personal relationships should be presented as established fact without corroborating evidence. The latest court development makes that distinction even more important: the legal case has been withdrawn, but there has been no verified public explanation for the decision.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
The withdrawal of a high-profile matrimonial case involving a sitting Chief Minister will inevitably attract public attention, but it is also a reminder that there are real people and families behind every legal proceeding. Sangeetha and Vijay have been married for more than two decades and have two children, and the allegations contained in the original petition concerned deeply personal aspects of their family life. Whatever the circumstances behind the withdrawal, those details deserve the same restraint and dignity that we would expect for any family going through a difficult period.
It is equally important not to confuse withdrawal with reconciliation or treat unverified social-media theories as facts. A court has now closed the present case, but it has not passed judgment on the allegations that were made, and Sangeetha remains legally entitled to seek fresh proceedings if she chooses to do so. Public figures are accountable for their public actions, particularly when they hold constitutional office, but accountability should not become an excuse for invading private lives or amplifying claims that have not been established.
