Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay felicitated Asian Games medallists and chess champions at a ceremony in Chennai on October 8, 2026, recognising their achievements with cash rewards and announcing measures to strengthen the state’s sporting ecosystem. Athlete Vithya Ramraj received a total of ₹1.55 crore for winning three medals at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan, while Indian cricketer Washington Sundar was awarded ₹75 lakh for his contribution to India’s gold medal-winning men’s cricket team.
In an emotional moment, Vijay invited pole vaulter Baranica Elangovan’s family onto the stage after she requested their presence, acknowledging the role families play in an athlete’s journey. The Chief Minister also announced substantial incentives for Tamil Nadu athletes who win medals at future Olympic and Paralympic Games. The ceremony coincided with the launch of the state’s Dream Olympics 2036 initiative, aimed at identifying talent, improving training facilities and helping athletes compete at the highest international level.
Record-Breaking Performances Receive Recognition
Vithya Ramraj emerged as one of the most celebrated athletes at the ceremony after an impressive campaign at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. She secured a gold medal in the women’s 4×400-metre relay, a silver in the mixed 4×400-metre relay and a bronze in the women’s 400-metre hurdles. Her performance in the hurdles, clocked at 54.75 seconds, broke the national record of 55.42 seconds set by P T Usha at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. The achievement brought renewed attention to Indian women’s athletics and the importance of sustained support for track-and-field competitors.
Washington Sundar was honoured for his contribution to India’s men’s cricket team, which won gold at the Asian Games. Baranica Elangovan, who won bronze in women’s pole vault, also received recognition. Her request to have her family join her on stage added a personal dimension to the event, highlighting how sporting achievements are often shared milestones for athletes and their loved ones. The state government distributed incentives according to medal categories, with Asian Games gold, silver and bronze medallists receiving ₹75 lakh, ₹50 lakh and ₹30 lakh respectively.
Dream Olympics 2036 Aims To Build A Sporting Ecosystem
Beyond rewarding recent achievements, the Tamil Nadu government outlined a longer-term plan to prepare athletes for international competition. Vijay launched the Dream Olympics 2036 initiative, which seeks to develop a pipeline of Olympic and Paralympic medallists through better training, infrastructure and financial assistance. Under the programme, eligible medallists from the Asian Games, Para Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and Para Commonwealth Games will receive annual assistance of ₹50 lakh for training, alongside a monthly stipend of ₹1 lakh.
The wider plan includes 10 Olympic Centres of Excellence, a proposed Tamil Nadu Olympic City, Tamil Nadu Sports City and SDAT Olympic Illam. The government has also announced Olympic and Paralympic medal incentives of ₹5 crore for gold, ₹3 crore for silver and ₹2 crore for bronze, alongside ₹15 lakh for athletes who qualify for the Olympics or Paralympics.
Sports Development Minister Aadhav Arjuna said the department had been given the freedom to develop international-standard facilities, including rehabilitation infrastructure. He also highlighted plans to upgrade 32 vacant plots into sports grounds. These measures seek to address the practical needs of athletes, from access to facilities and coaching to sustained financial support during preparation.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
Recognising athletes should go beyond celebrating medals and presenting prize money. Financial incentives can ease the burden of training expenses, equipment, travel and recovery, particularly for competitors who lack access to private sponsorship. However, lasting sporting excellence depends on consistent investment in grassroots programmes, qualified coaches, accessible facilities and sports science, alongside support for athletes from economically disadvantaged backgrounds and those with disabilities.
The Tamil Nadu government’s Dream Olympics 2036 initiative is an opportunity to build a system in which talent is identified early and athletes receive support throughout their careers, rather than only after winning medals. The moment involving Baranica Elangovan and her family also offered a reminder that behind every podium finish are people who provide encouragement, make sacrifices and help athletes persevere through setbacks. As the state moves towards its Olympic ambitions, transparent implementation, measurable progress and equal opportunities will be essential to turning announcements into meaningful outcomes.
Do you think financial rewards and better sporting infrastructure can help India produce more Olympic medallists, and what other support should governments provide to nurture young talent?
