On Monday, 18 May 2026, a 35-year-old speech-impaired woman was abducted and gang-raped near Karambakudi in Tamil Nadu’s Pudukkottai district. The incident occurred after two men in a car deceptively offered her a lift from a bus stop where she was waiting after her shift at a local rice mill. The survivor’s cries for help later alerted local residents, who rushed to her rescue and informed the authorities.

Law enforcement moved quickly following a formal complaint by the survivor’s mother; the local police registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act. In the latest development, Pudukkottai police confirmed that both suspects identified as Marimuthu (55) and Sekar (55) have now been arrested, with the second accused apprehended on Tuesday afternoon, 19 May, following an intensive manhunt.

Deception At The Transit Hub

The survivor, an unmarried woman with speech and hearing impairments, leads a quiet life with her mother and works at a private rice mill in Paschikottai, roughly 10 kilometres from her hometown. Her routine commute became her vulnerability on the evening of 18 May. After completing her shift, she was waiting for public transport at the Pachikottai Meghala Theatre bus stop.

A car carrying two men pulled up beside her. The occupants offered to drop her home a gesture that initially appeared to be a helpful act of community support. Given the late hour and her exhausting day at the mill, she stepped into the vehicle.

A Detour Into Terror

The situation escalated rapidly when the driver changed direction, steering away from her village. Recognizing the unfamiliar route, the woman attempted to question the men using gestures. However, the occupants who were later reported to be under the influence of alcohol intimidated her into silence.

The men drove her to a completely isolated area near a pond in Manakkollai village, where they subjected her to a brutal assault. Following the assault, they moved her to another location near Pillaiyar Kulam, abandoning her in the dark before speeding away. Despite her immense physical trauma and communication barriers, her cries for help caught the attention of nearby residents, who immediately intervened and contacted emergency services.

Law Enforcement Response and Arrests

Following the attack, the survivor’s mother lodged a formal complaint. The Pudukkottai police acted swiftly, registering a comprehensive case that included severe sections under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) alongside Section 92(b) of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, which specifically addresses atrocities committed against disabled individuals.

In the ensuing investigation, police identified the suspects as Marimuthu (55) and Sekar (55). Marimuthu was arrested early Tuesday morning and remanded to judicial custody. Following this, DSP Brinda formed a special team to track down the absconding driver, Sekar, who was successfully tracked down and arrested in Dindigul later that afternoon.

The survivor was promptly admitted to the Government Hospital in Pudukkottai, where she is currently receiving specialized medical treatment and psychological support

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

This deeply unsettling incident exposes the profound vulnerabilities that women with disabilities continue to face in our society. It is a stark reminder that physical infrastructure and public transit hubs are frequently unsafe, leaving the most vulnerable exposed to predators who mistake a perceived lack of voice for absolute defenselessness.

While the swift action of the Pudukkottai police and the immediate intervention of the local residents deserve appreciation, true safety cannot rely solely on reactive measures. We must collectively foster an environment of empathy, proactive vigilance, and robust institutional safeguards to ensure that no individual is left at the mercy of such violence.
